About

Sad Night Dynamite on Tour

London alt-R&B duo Sad Night Dynamite are Archie Blagden and Josh Greacen. Specializing  in a blend of psychedelic melodies, dub, rap, and spoken word, Blagden and Greacen are childhood friends who grew up in the English countryside, coincidentally not far from the site of the Glastonbury festival. In 2021, The Guardian named Sad Night Dynamite on their "One to Watch" list, name-checking the duo's diverse musical influences, ranging from Gorillaz to ska progenitors The Specials, and their high-profile listeners (FKA twigs is reportedly a big fan).

Prior to starting Sad Night Dynamite, both artists started their music education early, with Greacen giving piano performances in school concerts at just 7 years old. Meanwhile, Blagden played classical and Spanish guitar as a child and eventually learned to rock out on AC/DC and Led Zeppelin.

Though Blagden and Greacen attended different universities, they kept in touch, sending each other beats and melodies via email. After university, they rejoined in the 2010s and moved in together in East London. Their debut EP, Snd001, came out in 2020 and featured the lead single "Icy Violence." Snd001 also attracted the attention of Parlophone/Elektra, who released their 2021 self-titled mixtape. In 2021, Sad Night Dynamite likewise plotted out a 2022 tour with Glass Animals.

Opening up to The Line Of Best Fit about their unlikely sound combinations, the band said in 2021: "We want to put our music into that nightmarish dream world where you have beauty and violence and humor. It feels like an interesting place to start, in a world which you can't really recognize and putting the humanity back into it."

In 2022, Sad Night Dynamite released their second EP, Volume II, which featured guest spots from IDK ("Psychedelic Views") and Moonchild Sanelly ("Demon").

Though Sad Night Dynamite are still a relatively young act, they've stirred up a frenzy of media coverage over the last few years, with coverage in Billboard, Clash magazine, NME, The Face, Wonderland magazine, DIY magazine, and more.

No matter how high they climb, Blagden and Greacen are in full agreement that their music should sound like them. "One thing that was really important to us is that we had complete creative control over everything," said Greacen in an interview with Billboard in 2021. In 2022, Sad Night Dynamite shared the single "Black & White," which the duo described in an interview with The Line of Best Fit as "a tale of despair and rebirth. It's loosely based around Archie's visit to Glastonbury festival when he was 20 years old. 'Black & White' is ultimately about someone taking things too far, maybe even to the afterlife."
