I'd been to shows at the Observatory before and loved the space's energy, but this was my first time seeing a band play the smaller space at the venue, the Constellation Room. I was worried that the setup might make if difficult to see, but the stage is raised enough that I had a perfect view even from the back of a very crowded room. The Constellation Room also has a small, slightly raised area at the very back of the room with limited seating for those who are not able to stand for the whole show, as well as a place to take a break from the crowd if you're feeling boxed in.
But okay. Onto the bands.
The Crane Wives and their opening act, Tomi, both have incredible stage presence and got the crowd (who were already very excited) lit up. The Crane Wives played a mix of new music (including some unreleased tracks!) and old favorites - after inviting us all to "howl at the moon"(some stage lights), they went immediately into "The Moon Will Sing", and got the whole room shouting along.
Magic.
Anyway, if you go catch them later down the tour, wear your stomping boots, your best peasant dress, or your favorite botanical- or bug-patterned button up, and have a good time.
