About NASCAR Cup Series

The NASCAR Cup Series is top-tier of three national touring series in the sport alongside the Xfinity Series and Truck Series. The Cup Series operates with a points system. The driver sitting atop the leaderboard to finish the regular season earns 15 playoff points. The Cup Series playoff features the 16 highest-scoring drivers competing through four rounds. A winning driver and winning owner are annually crowned separately.

The Cup Series season runs from February to November every year. NASCAR relocated its Championship Weekend from Homestead-Miami Speedway, which hosted the event for 18 seasons, to ISM Raceway near Phoenix, Arizona.

Iconic tracks that host Cup Series races include the Charlotte Motor Speedway, Daytona International Speedway, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and Talladega Superspeedway. The Daytona 500 has annually served as the season-opening Cup Series race since 1982.

History of NASCAR Cup Series

The NASCAR Cup Series was founded in 1949 by Bill France Sr. and has undergone several evolutions since. It began as the Strictly Stock Series before switching to the Grand National Series (1950-71), Winston Cup Series (1971-2003), Nextel Cup Series (2004-07), Sprint Cup Series (2008-16) and the Monster Energy Series through the 2019 season.

NASCAR opted against renewing with Monster Energy and instead announced the Cup Series would feature a multilayered sponsorship model in December 2019. Busch Beer, Coca-Cola, GEICO, and Xfinity were named as "premier partners."

The trophy was renamed the Bill France Cup ahead of the 2020 season, the first without a title sponsor since 1971.

Richard Petty is the winningest all-time Cup Series driver with 200. The octogenarian notched his first win in 1960 and his last in 1984. In March 2019, though, Petty was surpassed by Kyle Busch in terms of all-time combined national series wins.

Jimmy Johnson topped the Cup Series from 2006 to 2010, marking the first time one driver had won in consecutive years since Jeff Gordon (1997-98). The late Dale Earnhardt did so on three separate occasions (1986-87, 1990-91 and 1993-94).

    Awesome Experience

by NellyGurl on 3/9/24Las Vegas Motor Speedway - Las Vegas

Coming from Hawaii we don't get this experience much. I enjoyed the adrenaline feeling when watching the race. Cheering on your favorite driver even if they don't come in 1st. Congratulations the winner cause it takes a lot to race at 200+ mph and keep your car in control. I hope to be able to attend more of these events and possibly in a different city as well.

    A great spectacle!

by BrissyT on 3/7/24Las Vegas Motor Speedway - Las Vegas

2nd ever NASCAR race and it didn’t disappoint. We sat in Petty Terrace, pretty high up, and it was perfect seating to see every corner and exits from the pits. Like all events like this food/drinks are overpriced and no cash. Even if you aren’t a race fan, NASCAR races are such an amazing spectacle. The fans are enthusiastic and dedicated to their fave drivers. It’s a blast! Onwards to the next race.

    Great motor sport experience

by MickyG on 3/6/24Las Vegas Motor Speedway - Las Vegas

The event was well setup and managed seating was good. Access to the event was good with traffic being managed well. The cost of food and beverages is extreme but this seems to be the norm in LV events

    Race fan

by Calvin on 3/6/24Las Vegas Motor Speedway - Las Vegas

Was very excited to get there and check out what was a bucket list item I always wanted to attend. The day was sunny but very windy which dropped the temp quite a bit. The racing wasn’t very exciting as the race leader from the start fell back due to an over heated engine due to debris on the track clogged his radiator. Hendrick Racing took over and they never looked back. I really wanted the bumper to bumper racing at 180mph NASCAR is famous for but that never developed. The Speedway was weird in that there were no parking lot areas identified and no signs directing people to ride share locations. Food wasn’t very expensive and there were plenty of vendors. Not related to the Speedway was getting stranded in the parking lot. On the way out I got a message our UBER reservation was canceled and few minutes later I got another message saying no drivers were available. 25 miles out of town and not a cab to be seen. It was humiliating to chase down cars begging for a ride back to the strip. I finally did get a guy to take me, my wife and brother back to town and pay double the reservation cost I booked with UBER. Never ever with those guys again.

    LVMS

by Traveling fan on 3/6/24Las Vegas Motor Speedway - Las Vegas

The seats were GREAT and the racing was very Good!! The Speedway needs to improve the signs telling fans where they can go for Ubers and Taxies. They also need to improve the food at the track. They don't have a great selection and what they do have, is SO SO SO CRAZY PRICED for what you get. $16.00 for a Hotdog with peppers and onions???? I have been to several tracks and they allow coolers and outside food. They are still way better than LVMS on food stands, even with letting people bring things in.....

    Good race but

by D Vid on 3/6/24Las Vegas Motor Speedway - Las Vegas

Race was good , the roar of the cars was the best but no point paying for expensive seats as they just let you sit anywhere

The race was fun. Not so much fun after the race.

by Botch on 3/6/24Las Vegas Motor Speedway - Las Vegas

The race experience was awesome. The taxi/rideshare setup at LVMS needs improvement. It was a chaotic mess. It took nearly 2 hours to get picked up after the race. We missed part of a concert later that evening because of difficulty hailing a taxi/rideshare.
