As a Christmas gift for my girlfriend, I purchased four plays to see in Chicago throughout the year. Middletown was the first. If I did know what it was about when I bought them, I had forgotten by the time we got there. I really didn't remember that it was a cast of 4 with no props or costumes or anything. As the first actress began speaking, explaining how the show will go, I was very nervous. Without giving too much away, it wasn't performed like any play I had ever seen. It was more like a stage rehearsal. Oh well, we were already there so may as well sit back and see where it goes. Despite the lack of scenery or anything else, the actors pulled me into the story. It is written in a way for audience members to connect with one or more of the cast. This was only the part of the beauty of this play. The real magic was how it used events from the past to instantly plug into and bring back the emotions evoked at that time. By the end of the show and after a roller coaster of emotions, I realized the meaning behind the title.
I really enjoyed my experience on Sunday afternoon. The play was excellent. Loved the cast! I highly recommend it.
A wonderful journey thru life w/ two interesting & unique couples. They go thru lots of funny and some very sad situations, but the big message to me was... You CAN get thru anything... and having a true friend makes it a little easier. Relatable to all ages... 20’s to 90’s. See it!!
My husband and I loved this show. It brought out many emotions and left us thinking. Highly recommend.
