Michelangelo – A Different View on Tour

The crowds and neck ache that generally accompany visits to the Sistine Chapel's famous ceiling become a thing of the past when Michelangelo – A Different View comes to town. While Michelangelo painted his High Renaissance masterpiece 72 feet overhead between 1508 and 1512, visitors can now contemplate immaculately detailed reproductions of the world's most famous frescoes at their leisure. The art is mounted on pedestals and, in the case of centerpiece image The Creation of Adam, laid out on the floor. In 2014, the Vatican City licensed high-resolution images of Michelangelo's frescoes to event producer Martin Biallas. The impressively detailed A Different View has been on tour since 2015, when it debuted in Montreal. "Without having seen the Sistine Chapel," wrote Germany's Goethe in 1787, "one can form no appreciable idea of what one man is capable of achieving." Could he have ever imagined that one day the Sistine Chapel would come to us?

About Michelangelo – A Different View

Michelangelo Buonarroti was considered primarily a sculptor when he was commissioned in 1508 to paint over what had been a simple starry sky decorating the Sistine Chapel's ceiling. He would surely have been inspired by the frescoes of Jesus and Moses — painted by Sandro Botticelli, Pietro Perugino, Domenico Ghirlandaio and Cosimo Rosselli — that already adorned the chapel, and these too are on display in A Different View. Michelangelo parlayed his commission by Pope Julius II to paint the 12 apostles into a monumental cavalcade of biblical life, and ended up rendering more than 300 biblical characters in bright colors easily visible from the chapel floor. A gruesome self-portrait on the peeled skin of St. Bartholomew can be seen in The Last Judgment, painted 25 years after the ceiling was completed. The striking images on display in A Different View were photographed during the glorious restoration of the chapel that took place between 1984 and 1994. All roads may lead to Rome, but, in the case of Michelangelo – A Different View, the road leads to you, the viewer.

by Vicky on 6/15/22Rhode Island Convention Center - Providence

I had injured my back the day before, however I was NOT going to miss this experience and it was well worth the pain!! The plethora of information, direction and flow of the frescos and paintings were incredible! I am a huge admirer of Michelangelo's art and this definitely was not a disappointment!!! Bravo, bravo!!!

    Disappointing

by Visitor on 6/14/22Rhode Island Convention Center - Providence

Since we have seen the Sistine Chapel in Rome ,I can say it was nice to see images but the panel on the floor simply can’t be viewed without proper elevation right around the panel . In our opinion the elevation that was there was hopelessly inadequate. The commentary by Michelangelo was lacklustre. It is a pity this exhibition has the perfect subject matter to make an excellent exhibition but what was done is really not Worthwhile.

A chance to the Sistine Chapel up close!

by Billy Boy on 6/13/22Rhode Island Convention Center - Providence

This show provided you with the opportunity to see the artwork of the Sistine Chapel. The ceiling was displayed on the floor for easy viewing. The event was untimed, so you could spend as much time as you wanted at any site. By examining the individual sections, you could go back to the overall picture and see where they fit in the total masterpiece. The only thing that I didn't understand was why the individual sections were not in numeric order. This would have facilitated viewing using the audio guide available. A good experience.

    Disorganized

Pictures did not follow the narration so we were scuttling around like June bugs.

    Very disorganized!

by JennyF on 6/11/22Rhode Island Convention Center - Providence

The exhibit, in addition to being set up in a very disorganized manner, was very disappointing. I felt like it was a waste of my time and money. The only good thing about it was that it wasn’t crowded.

    Extremely Disappointed

by Sue on 6/11/22Rhode Island Convention Center - Providence

I was really looking forward to see this exhibition. After entering the room, I was given an audio devise which would explain each picture. Unfortunately the sequence of the pictures in the room and the sequence of the audio presentation were not in sync. It was so frustrating and unnecessary. This exhibit had already been at the Providence venue for several weeks. I was told by personal that this disparity between the audio and exhibit sequence was made at the initial set; yet the mistake was not corrected. Totally unacceptable.

    Disappointed

by Salo on 6/6/22Rhode Island Convention Center - Providence

Having visited the Sistine Chapel itself I was disappointed. Exhibit speaks mostly about the Christian stories which inspired painting and not Michaelangelo’s experience. Also panels being out of actual order was confusing.

    Very disappointed

by Claude on 5/18/22Rhode Island Convention Center - Providence

In a cavernous cement room there were large pics of the sistine chapel. They were not particularly clear nor impressive. You could tell they were blown up more than they should’ve been I felt it was a total waste of money and time

    Not as expected

by Hboo on 5/18/22Rhode Island Convention Center - Providence

I expected all of the paintings to be in the order that they are in the Sistine Chapel but they were out of order and the set up in the middle went backwards… I figured if I followed the paintings in numerical order, it would be in order. It was just set up funky and confused me a bit.

Could have been so much more!

by Art Lover on 4/21/22Raising Canes River Center Arena - Baton Rouge

My daughter and I are art fanatics, but we brought my husband along for this event. After having just seen the Van Gogh exhibit in New Orleans the week before, we were so let down by the Michelangelo exhibit. Don't get me wrong - Michelangelo's work was glorious and amazing, but the venue didn't do it justice at all. The lighting was fluorescent and too bright and there were people milling around with their phones to their ears listening to the audio - a little too loudly. It was a great idea to get to see these images up close rather than craning your neck to see them on the Sistine Chapel ceiling, but it almost felt disrespectful to display them so poorly in the bright lighting and not in any order with the recordings. A bit more attention to the ambiance and the setting would have been nice and more artistic. It felt like I was seeing the work in a way it wasn't intended to be seen. Also, the signage pointing to the entrance to the event would have been helpful. My family and several others walked around the Raising Cane center to find signage or directions to the entrance. It could have been done with so much more focus on the details. In terms of marketing, I only heard about this event 2 weeks before it was scheduled to end. I had no idea it was even in Baton Rouge. What a lost opportunity. At least Michelangelo didn't disappoint.
