About

MICHAEL MCDONALD IN CONCERT:

Ever since his 1982 solo debut, Michael McDonald has consistently dominated soft rock airwaves with his rich baritone voice and soulful performances. McDonald's powerhouse live shows are a veritable trip back in time, combining beloved hits like "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)" with classic material from his days with the Doobie Brothers. A distinguished performer with undeniable soul, McDonald never fails to bring the house down, and his 2014 tour dates will be no different.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in St. Louis, McDonald played in several bands in high school before heading out to Los Angeles to pursue music professionally. By the mid-'70s, he had landed himself a gig playing with jazz rock legends Steely Dan, appearing on several of their most influential albums including 1977's Aja and 1980's Gaucho. Around the same time, he was recruited by the Doobie Brothers for a national tour, going on to become a full-time member of the band as lead vocalist on classic recordings like "Takin' it to the Streets" and "What a Fool Believes." Following the Doobie's farewell tour, McDonald released his 1982 solo debut If That's What It Takes, a Top 10 hit on both the Billboard 200 and R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. With eight studio albums and an extensive list of acclaimed collaborations under his belt, McDonald has plenty of hits to choose from as he puts together the setlists for his 2014 tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"He was absolutely wonderful as was his band and singers accompanying him. His voice was impeccable and just as awesome as it is on all of his recorded music."

"The performance was exceptional. They sounded terrific and the setlist was a blend of solid hits and several covers that meshed perfectly. The audience was totally engaged and McDonald really hit it out of the park."

"The guy still has it! Nice mix of Doobie days, and his own twist on some Motown standards. The musicians and female vocalist complimenting him were fantastic in their own right."

Venue is absolutely perfect. All seats are great.

by A. on 8/6/19The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

Sound system and lighting was excellent. My one regret is that the camera man never took close ups of Mr McDonald. I expected to see Mr. McDonald's expressions. This should have been thought out more carefully. Otherwise excellent performance by Michael McDonald and Chaka Chan. I gave it four stars due to poor camera angles.

Still so good after all these Years

We really enjoyed both acts! We liked that Michael McDonald came out and sang with Chaka!

    still has it

by balldude on 8/6/19The Libbey Bowl - Ojai

First let me comment on how nice a venue the Libbey Bowl is highly recommend this place to watch a concert. Michael McDonald is like a bottle of wine only gets better with age as that sultry, soulful voice of his is still as spellbinding as ever. Surrounding himself with quality musicians he played one great song after another including his hits from his time with The Doobie Brothers such as Takin it to the streets and What a fool believes. Thoroughly enjoyable nostalgic trip into an era of music from my youth highly recommend this show for young and old alike.

Warm, pleasant evening of great music

    by C. Y. on 8/6/19The Libbey Bowl - Ojai

Started out with Michael's son's band, which is a very polished, melodic rock group. They played a lot of songs for a starter band. McDonald came on, and performed all his greatest hits as well as some newer songs. His band was excellent, and he gave a great effort at the difficult singing his songs require. Needless to say, he has lost some of the power in his voice. It was great to be able to see him while he can still belt it out.

The Venue was great. Small and outside.

by Summer Girl on 8/6/19The Libbey Bowl - Ojai

The only thing we were all disappointed in, was that Michael McDonald only played for approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes and our tickets were over $100.00.

    Dynamite performance!

by GrizzlyBeast on 8/6/19The Libbey Bowl - Ojai

What else would you expect? With a tight team of musicians who have honed their craft and a backup singer that clearly enjoys what she does Michael’s voice emoted every word. Good mix of numbers with an encore that brought the crowd out of their seats. His son, DY, and his band showed a marked lack of skill and experience. Maybe they’ll grow into it.

    Nice Concert in the park!

by Happy on 8/6/19The Libbey Bowl - Ojai

He did a nice job of song rotation with a couple of new ones. The show was to start at 7pm, but the warm-up band started off at 7:10pm and was loud with too many guitar solos. McDonald came on at 8:10pm for an hour + encore! His voice is unique and he still gives a great show behind the piano!

    Awesome Venue Great Show

by Bert on 8/6/19The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

I Loved how the show and how it moved along artist song and didn't do a lot of personal talking, break in between was sufficient. Great Show

    OC Fair

by Jo Jo on 8/6/19The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

OC Fair is always a good venue. At night, it cools down & you get a lil breeze. Chaka Khan is an absolute performer, Michael McDonald is good but I wanted to hear more of his older songs... Overall a beautiful night.

    A great evening!!

by Lady Stark on 8/5/19The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

The evening was great all around. The venue is perfect for concerts. Having already eaten at the Fair, we were pleased to visit the Cocktail and beer booths. All the seats are good. Wasnt sure about seeing Chaka Kahn, but thoroughly enjoyed her. She sang phenomenally. We really liked Michael McDonald coming out and singing with her. He was awesome as well. Such a talent, really enjoyed his songs again! It was great when Chaka Kahn came out and helped him close the show. If her fans left early, they missed out! Upon leaving we were dreading the traffic out of the parking lot, but that went so smoothly! I always check to see who will be in concert at the OC Fair cuz this is a good time!

    Awesome Concert! Great Vocals!

by Suschen on 8/5/19The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

Only bummer was that the Bass was way too loud! It drowned out all the other instruments in Michael McDonald's band.

    Never Enough of Michael McDonald

by Cece on 8/5/19The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

Can’t get enough of listening to Michael McDonald sing! Love his soulful voice! It was nice to hear plenty of his old music and wish I could have heard more of his Motown renditions. It was also wonderful to hear the duets with Chaka Khan. The two of them appear to have a genuine respect and appreciation for each other. I always try to see Michael McDonald when he’s in OC!

    Michael McDonald/Chaka Khan Performance Review

by The Mad Platter on 8/5/19The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

I saw Michael McDonald a couple of years ago with Boz Scaggs, and I was very disappointed with Michael McDonald's performance due to his set list and weak vocals. THIS TIME HE WAS MUCH BETTER. NOT ONLY DID HIS VOICE SOUND BETTER, BUT HIS SET LIST WAS SPOT ON. BASED ON THIS PERFORMANCE, I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND SEEING HIM IN PERSON. CHAKA KHAN HAS ALWAYS HAD AN INCREDIBLE VOICE WITH A CRAZY RANGE & HER PERFORMANCE ON THIS NIGHT DID NOT DISAPPOINT. IN ADDITION, HER BAND & BACKGROUND VOCALISTS ARE PERFECTION. THIS WAS A GREAT COMBINED SHOW BY BOTH ARTISTS.

    Awesome concert!

by compoundw on 8/5/19The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

The Michael McDonald/Chaka Khan concert was wonderful! Though both bands were A+ excellent, I thought that Chaka Khan was off-the-charts outstanding!!! I love Michael McDonald's amazing voice and the beautiful spiritual message that comes through in his music. The duets that Chaka Khan and Michael McDonald did were awesome, to say the least. All in all, it was a fabulous, fun evening and I'm so glad that I attended!

Great performances but very uncomfortable Seats

by KandDDaniels on 8/5/19The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

We enjoyed the performances. Great sound, beautiful screen clarity. Very nice outdoor venue...BUT the seats are too narrow. They are too tight, too close, and VERY uncomfortable. It took away from the experience.

    Great seats, great concert

by BBoomer on 8/5/19The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

I guess you have to expect older women to stand up in front of you and shake their wrinkled behinds all night and block your Great view of Stage. Watching the jumbo screen is not as fun, but great to hear music. Venue is still great and Ticketmaster is so easy and convenient.
