About Men's Big Ten Basketball Tournament

Conference championships aren't just automatic tickets to the NCAA tournament every March; they're prestigious mini boiler rooms of pressure for every team in a conference. The Big Ten championship is one of these gatherings, and every year, the best teams from the Midwest (and also Rutgers) descend on an arena to decide who is the best of the best. The hosts have included legendary arenas such as the Verizon Center in Washington D.C., the United Center in Chicago, the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis and of course, Madison Square Garden in New York City.

While tournament settings usually open up the field for upsets, historically the Big Ten Conference Men's Basketball Tournament's most-winning seed is the #1 seed, having won eight times since 1998. That's followed by the second seed, which has won five times (seven if you count two vacated wins by Michigan and Ohio State) and the third seed, which has won twice. No other seed has won more than once, so you can expect the heavyweights to not only go deep in the tournament, but win more often than not. The biggest upset came in 2017, when Michigan crawled up from the #7 seed to win the whole thing.

Michigan State has won the most tournaments in history, with five titles in 21 tournaments. Ohio State is second, with four, and Wisconsin rounds out the Top 3 with three total wins. Unsurprisingly, legendary Michigan State coach Tom Izzo has won the most titles by a single coach, manning the helm for every single one of the Spartans' triumphs in the Big Ten tourney. On the other hand, Northwestern has fallen lowest in tournament history, compiling a 9-21 record since the first edition of the tournament. And the Wildcats' .300 winning percentage is tied for worst with Nebraska, who only joined the Big Ten in 2011.

    Buyer Beware

    by T. J. on 3/10/23

Buyer beware - If there are not enough people in attendance, the United Center will only open the lower bowl and indicate seating is General Admission. While one would argue that’s a plus, e.g. you purchased 300-level “nose bleeds”, the same cannot be said if you purchased Club Level or simply an expensive ticket. My advice for the Wednesday/Thursday games: buy the least expensive tickets (many at $3 this past Wednesday) and get their early for great options.

Big Ten Tournament at United Center

by SJA on 3/20/19United Center - Chicago

Tickets were in nice Location in Minnesota block. Fans in the area were very friendly and the venue is great for a tournament. Easy walk to local breweries between sessions. Hope to return to this tournament next time it is in Chicago.

    Good tournament, questionable seats.

by Einar on 3/20/19United Center - Chicago

I know I paid for the lower priced all session tickets. But to have purchased them right after they went on sale and to end up second row from the top behind the backboard was pretty questionable.

by Dingobob on 3/20/19United Center - Chicago

What a FANTASTIC time! Seeing all the fans dressed in their school colors and all interested in seeing good, intense basketball was great. Easy access with public bus, public parking lots, Uber lot was great. Chicago is a CENTRALLY located for almost all the Big Ten schools. Definitely coming back in 2021!

    Unbelievable Experience

    by T. P. on 3/20/19United Center - Chicago

I am going to make this an annual trip for sure regardless if it is in Chicago, Indy, or New York.....(It should NEVER be in New York.) The atmosphere was unbelievable. It felt like I was back home here in Michigan when Michigan State was playing. If you have never been to this event, do it. You have to go to the entire tournament. Not just a few games.

    Wolverines dominated!

by Lauri on 3/18/19United Center - Chicago

B1G Tourney in Chicago at the United Center is how it should be EVERY YEAR! Central location to all (original) big ten teams and the city has plenty to do and see while not watching games. GO BLUE!!!

This game was incredibly outstanding! Our first college basketball game, our team pulled ahead in overtime. Awesome. a little confusion at will call to get the tickets, they asked for a sale number which I didn't have. After a quick search, display of my I'd & confirmation email I got them no problem.
