About

About MEAC Basketball Tournament

Across the country, March signifies the start of college basketball's crazy postseason. The first steps toward March Madness are the conference tournaments that take place in each of the NCAA's conferences.

Among those is the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), whose tournament dates back to 1972. As one of the smallest conferences in the country, the MEAC sends only one team to the NCAA tournament — its conference champion, crowned at the end of an 11-team, single-elimination tournament. The current iteration of the tournament takes place at Norfolk Scope in Virginia, the former home of the Old Dominion Monarchs.

No team has ever been more successful in the MEAC tournament than the North Carolina A&T Aggies, who have won the title a record 16 times. However, in-state rival North Carolina Central has been successful more recently, with three championships in the ‘10s.

While the MEAC doesn't have the name recognition of the bigger conferences, a handful of NBA players got their start in the conference. The 2012 tournament MVP Kyle O'Quinn parlayed a successful college career into a solid career in the NBA, while Florida A&M's Jerome James carved out an 11-year career in the early part of the 21st century.

Perhaps the most successful MEAC player in the NBA was North Carolina A&T's Al Attles, who played 11 seasons in the NBA after being drafted in 1960. Attles played his entire career with the Warriors, first in Philadelphia, then when the team moved west, in San Francisco.

    2024 MEAC TOURNAMENT

by Evie on 4/10/24Scope Arena - Norfolk

It had been advertised at all of our games that videos were needed of group/s interested in providing entertainment at the event; however, there was only a group of young dancers. It would be great to incorporate some entertainment. There is a lot of great talent locally. However, Saturday's outside activities were outstanding. Everyone was raving about the children's activity, the food and clothes vendors, as well as entertainment. OUTSTANDING! I always enjoy the tournament in our beautiful city. I chatted with out of towners who look forward to coming here. They highlighted the hotels and restaurants.

    NSU staff

It was different not having an actual ticket. Navigating the electronic ticket was good but I had difficulties with my password and getting the app.

The MEAC gets better each year! The games were exciting, great to see old friends, it is a homecoming of sorts! The outside event on Saturday was also great. It was a truly a family affair.

    The Cold Scope

by Smooch on 3/19/24Scope Arena - Norfolk

I enjoyed the MEAC TOURNAMENT. Some things that could have been better: * The coldness of the Scope. * The microphone at the table was not loud enough. * The DJ's microphone was not loud enough. * I know that it's a Scope regulation, however can there be some cash concession stands.

    Venue venue, venue

by HC on 3/19/24Scope Arena - Norfolk

The MEAC tournament games were great after getting past some of the quarterfinal games. But, the Scope Arena is not hospitable. The Scope was very cold inside. I mean cold ! When the MEAC first came to the Scope the bathrooms were cleaned and restocked with paper towels and toilet paper prior to the evening games. I noticed that in the morning, you could tell the area around the seats and stairs were dirty and still had debris from the previous day. again, the venue gets a poor grade. Turn the heat on we are not there for ice hockey ! 3 more years at the Scope really.

    Good

by KC on 3/19/24Scope Arena - Norfolk

The MEAC was good. Would prefer more vendors at the event and would definitely appreciate the VENUE keeping the food and drink vendors open to at least after half time of the last game.

    Great!!

    by Mico22 on 3/19/24Scope Arena - Norfolk

I truly enjoyed myself at MEAC 2024! Watching the games, meeting new people and seeing old friends. It's like a family. On Saturday there was an outdoor party. The entertainment, vendors, food trucks and activities for the children was something new and different. Can't wait until MEAC 2025!

    Nice, but needs more . . .

by Don V on 3/19/24Scope Arena - Norfolk

It's always good to go to the MEAC tournament, which is akin to a Black family reunion. The Scope is a nice venue, although it should be moved to the Baltimore/Washington area occasionally so as not to give Norfolk St. the home court advantage every year. My major complaint was the lack of food options. A food booth serving tacos, another one serving hot dogs and a popcorn concession. That was it! I noticed a few concessions were closed, probably because the tournament might only bring in about 3 or 4 thousand on a given day unlike the 15,000+ that you may see at a Power 5 tournament. So what, those in attendance like to eat. It's part of the experience the same as the games, cheerleaders, bands, etc. The other complaint was that they moved many of the vendors to the entrance area of the arena where they were on the bottom level in prior years. That created more of a place to socialize. I'll continue to go and support the MEAC, but improvements need to be made for the fan experience.
