    Boring

by J on 2/23/22Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

Not much happens . A dysfunctional family wringing their hands about their morphine addicted mother . Neither the plot ( none really ) nor the language were of any interest

    Abridged and dull

by AndyC_daddy on 2/23/22Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

Acting was decent but not great. Setting was cluttered for no reason. Abandonment of the original era was unsuccessful. The abridgment was not helpful. All together, it made the production boring and forgettable.

    It’s All About The Journey

by Sparky on 2/18/22Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

Loved the production. O’Neill would be proud. Felt current without changing a word of original dialogue. Acting is superb and very moving. Wasn’t familiar with Jason Bowen, but his performance was outstanding.

    Thumbs down!

by Kembell Huyke on 2/18/22Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

I ran home to watch Sidney Lumet's film adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's masterpiece. Despite the excellent performances of this particular cast, it was terribly disappointing to see about two hours missing. I will never see anything directed by Mr. O'Hara. This is one of my favorite plays in life and can barely wait to see a FULL production.

    Long Day

by Bobby Bones on 2/18/22Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

Great acting. Even years later this tragic story is still relevant. Minetta theater is a perfect small venue. Not a bad seat in the house.

    Tedious

by blackdog on 2/16/22Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

Throughout the performance, I kept waiting for an involvement with the play. The dialogue was flatly delivered in voices so subdued that I had to strain to follow the dialogue. The lines were delivered so flat at such a level that i began to wonder if it was myself or not. Toward the end the answer came,. a glass was broken and the sound came loud and clear. It was the voices onstage. I had hoped that the shortening of the play to eliminate an intermission would actually tighten the tension inherent in the play. he soft voices straining the listener did the opposite. There was enough rustling in the audience to indicate I was not the only person experiencing the same problem.

    Why is theater so uncomfortable?

by Gnu Yawker on 2/15/22Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

Hot theater… sitting in a tiny seat, next to an older overweight man incapable of keeping his legs closed, overflowing into my space, with loud breathing problems… watching a play which tracks the dissolution of an American family. I was checking my watch every few minutes.

    So bad

by Me on 2/14/22Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

This is the first play I have ever considered walking out of (like the woman the next row over did!). Had there been an intermission, I would have. It was almost unbearable, even though much of the acting was excellent. Also, it seemed like in distilling a four hour play down to two hours, the director decided to leave us exclusively with the scenes where each character, almost in turn, went on and one about how miserable their life was. It was basically two hours of that with very little in between. And, even worse, the effect was so misogynist. Clearly, by letting the one female character in the play explain that she was miserable and had become an addict because love and marriage and motherhood—and their related tragedies—stripped her of her life’s ambitions, the effect of the play itself was that we got to watch her bounce between acting like a child, being strung out, whining, or wailing for two hours, without a single moment where we could see her humanized. And the references to the other females were exceptionally misogynist, grotesque totally dehumanizing references to women at a brothel. I mean, come on, it is 2022 and this was an adaptation—the director couldn’t figure out how to do that better? SO disappointing.

    A very disjointed production

by JR on 2/9/22Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

I loved the idea of artfully compressing Long Day's Journey. But this production never seemed to come together. I saw the director's hand, which I don't mind. But the ensemble didn't seem to exist. At times the actors were playing the "condition" rather than the action. The result was the production that lacked emotional truth. O'Neill's impulse to write this play was clearly undergirded by love and forgiveness, as well as longing, sadness and grief. I didn't catch the love between the characters in this new revision.
