About

Leikeli47 in Concert

Leikeli47 is mysterious — many faces all at once, yet faceless at the same time. She's never appeared unmasked, nor has she revealed her real name or age. Her Twitter feed has only a handful of tweets with scattered show flyers, including one for 2019's nationwide The Acrylic Tour.

In effect, the Brooklyn rapper has made a career out of controlling her own narrative and eliminating the media tendency to characterize female artists based on their appearance. Her artistic expression always stands front and center, and she's risen in hip-hop with equal parts battle-ready flow, silky singing voice, and top-notch visuals.

Where likewise masked rapper MF Doom carries a built-in villainous machismo, Leikeli47 (pronounced Leh-kay-lee) is forged in a fierce black feminine mystique and doesn't come across like she's taking herself too seriously. At a 2018 SXSW show at Cheer Up Charlie's in Austin, a celebration of diverse dance styles broke out among her steady rhymes as different people from the crowd joined her on stage during each song.

Perhaps the best reflection of who Leikeli47 is and how she approaches her art are her videos, like the Brooklyn bodega set of "Miss Me" and the caricature-driven clip for the slick boogie of "Money," which has clocked in more than 3 million YouTube views. While her live appearances have been limited, her persona continues to expand in dynamic fashion with each album's release on the live stage.

Leikeli47 Background

Leikeli47 has purposefully kept details about her life scant. But we know that she grew up in Brooklyn's Bed-Stuy neighborhood as a shy kid who bounced around housing projects, found solace in music, and worshipped Notorious B.I.G.

After dropping cult-ish mixtapes on her Tumblr, she remained concealed and never spoke with the press for the first few years of her career. As her popularity snowballed online, she signed to RCA and made her first live appearance with Diplo and Skrillex on New Year's Eve of 2015 at Madison Square Garden in New York. She's released two LPs on RCA — Wash & Set and Acrylic — and both effectively describe the black condition in America, from the plight of the people of Flint, Michigan, to tongue-in-cheek dissections of misogyny.

Leikeli47 was 10 stars, Smiling Moose was barely 4

by GlittahBunni on 4/6/19Smiling Moose - Pittsburgh

First off, let me say I have no complaints about Leikeli47, none whatsoever. She was brilliant, incredible, everything I hoped she would be and more / I have to say, this concert would have been perfect if it wasn’t at the Smiling Moose. Not only did the standing room seem extremely tight and uncomforable, the sound system obliterated my hearing. I had 1 drink the entire time I was there, only because it was absolutely impossible to make it to the bar, order a drink, & make it back to your spot. There were 2 floors in the bar, the concert was upstairs. Since the upstairs was packed, I decided to go downstairs for a drink. I was then told that the drinks could not be transported between floors. Whatever floor you bought the drink on had to be the floor you finished consuming your drink. Super disappointed in the venue.
