    King Lear

by newtoGaslight on 6/24/13The Gaslight Theater - St Louis

First time at The Gaslight Theater. Enjoyed it being a small, intimate venue. The play and acting went well and was quite impressed with the Fool (Bobby Miller) as well as the actor who played Edmund (Rusty Gunther). It seemed that Gunther had a penetrating stare into the audience when he was on stage and was a person would could not be ignored.

    Don't miss this production

by Mabinogion on 6/17/13The Gaslight Theater - St Louis

The little Gaslight Theater proved entirely adequate for the staging of this oversized Shakespearean tragedy; it is remarkable that it succeeds so well. The actors playing Lear, The Fool, and the three daughters Cordelia, Goneril, and Regan, were very, very good. Thanks and congratulations to the entire company and everyone who contributed, including set design and costumes. The one drawback to this production is that the tragic denouement did not pack the emotional impact it should have. I think it might help if the action were drawn out a bit, and lighting employed to greater effect. For example, when Cordelia's body is brought in by Lear, who wails in despair, the moment should be wrung for its emotion, not quickly passed by. This event should be underscored as much as possible--by gestures of other actors, by lighting, by sound effects. But overall, I think the Actors' Studio was very brave to take on this drama of all dramas, and it is a fine production and a very memorable evening.

    King Lear was terrific

by Glovesmith on 6/17/13The Gaslight Theater - St Louis

The actors were uniformly great. The set was extraordinarily creatively managed. The manner in which the actors used the audience's area for most entrances/exits made it seem even more intimate.
