About

THE IMPROVISED SHAKEPEARE COMPANY:

If you prefer your comedy dressed in tall socks and tunics, then the Improvised Shakespeare Company is definitely for you. These seasoned comedians have brushed up on their Elizabethan elocution to present polished puns and quickly concoct rhyming couplets to make audiences crack up. The only thing ticket buyers have to do is provide a suggestion for a play that has yet to be written and then sit back as these lords of improv fabricate side-splitting soliloquies. Now the Improvised Shakespeare Company is taking their award-winning show out of their native Chicago to delight the groundlings in select cities across North American, with familiar faces and poetic flare sure to crop up at every turn.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

The Improvised Shakespeare Company was founded in 2005 as an outlet for members of Chicago’s Improv Olympic -- one of the most respected improvisational comedy theaters in a city regarded as the birthplace of the art form. Even in this prestigious setting, the ISC stood out, winning recognition as the city’s best improv group according to both the Chicago Reader and the Chicago Examiner. The group has taken their elite Elizabethan English skills to festivals like Bumbershoot, Bonnaroo, and Just for Laughs, and is one of the few improv shows to develop a touring company. Founding member Thomas Middleditch also gained notoriety in 2014 with his starring role on the HBO sitcom Silicon Valley, increasing the ISC’s already high profile. The troupe continues to draw out crowds of Shakespearean proportions every time they take their hilarious show on tour.

We had seen them perform in Chicago a few times and it was always a hysterical show. This was no different. So smart, funny, and entertaining. Best improv ever. Love them!!

    Hilarious!

by RatedRKO16 on 5/3/16Des Moines Performing Arts - Temple Theater - Des Moines

If you look up some of their stuff on YouTube, it wasn't much different. They did a show called "Conspiracy Theory" in which there was a plot to kill Caesar. There were a lot of funny twists, political comedy and mostly slapstick, I would call it. The brilliance is their rhyming and huge vocabulary. If the audience doesn't get the joke, they will explain it, which makes it even funnier. The ticket price was a bit much, but I would do it all over again!

I can't imagine being able to do what these guys do! What a thoroughly enjoyable, laugh-a-minute time in the theater. I enjoyed the performance so much on Thursday night, I came back on Saturday.

true to form and funny as hell

by kmeIowa on 5/2/16Des Moines Performing Arts - Temple Theater - Des Moines

Amazing Shakespearean improv! One or two of the 5 actors were simply brilliant. One guy wasn't very "on", but hey, it happens. They slipped into a bit of Monty Pythonish but overall kept generally true to the bard, including bawdy bits, tragic romance triangles, and of course, everyone died.

Thy Brother Julius - an Instant Classic!

by MADandAGD on 2/23/16Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

We simply had the best time at this event, which was delivered with all the skill you'd expect of a truly Shakespearean performance. Language, demeanor, staging, all were excellent... and the witty inclusion of popular/contemporary subject matter into the classic Roman theme was spot on. Actors were amazing at creating multiple roles, without costume change, and often playing against themselves (switching between 2 or more characters they created during different scenes), with hilarious outcomes. Without a doubt, I'd see them over and over again as it's definitely never the same show twice.

This is one of the best improv shows in Chicago. If you are a lover of comedy, improv, Shakespeare style acting, or impressive on stage performance, than this show is a must see. I have been to the show 4 times, and have not been disappointed. I plan to see many more shows. It is a great show to take out of town guest to. I love it! I recommend that you go see the show.
