HIATUS KAIYOTE IN CONCERT:

Australian neo-soul quartet Hiatus Kaiyote has been stirring up significant stateside buzz with their hip hop-influenced sound, jaw-dropping musicianship, and vibe-heavy live performances. At the group's jazzy, laid-back shows stylish frontwoman Nai Palm flaunts serious guitar fretwork while the rest of the band ups the ante with virtuosic keys, bass, and drums. Their instrumental skills are impressive but the real star of the show is Palm's sultry and soulful voice, which she playfully weaves through groove-heavy tracks like "Nakamarra" and "By Fire". With their cosmic lyrics, outré stagewear, and prodigious chops, Hiatus Kaiyote take ticket buyers on an unforgettable future-soul trip every time they tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Hiatus Kaiyote formed in Melbourne in 2011 and released their debut album Tawk Tomahawk the following year. The record was a hit with critics for its progressive combination of hip hop, soul, and jazz, and frontwoman Nai Palm's rich vocals firmly established her as an R&B powerhouse. Rapper Q-Tip caught wind of the release, and in 2013 he teamed up with the band on the collaborative track "Nakamarra". The song was nominated for a Grammy for Best R&B Performance -- the first time an Australian group had ever been nominated in the R&B category. After extensive touring the group followed up in 2014 with the EP By Fire, and in 2015 they released their sophomore album Choose Your Weapon. The record peaked at No. 22 on the Australian charts, drawing the band out for an acclaimed tour that has ticket buyers dying to catch them live.

    Stripped Down, Please

by Jillian on 10/7/23The Sound - Del Mar

I had never seen this band before and was taking a leap of faith. Great vocals, but I would have enjoyed more stripped down versions of most songs. Just too much electronic noise, for me, that drowned out the craft of the musicians and singers. Glad I satisfied my curiosity, but probably won’t see them again. Love this venue and looking forward to more shows there.

    Hiatus Kayote

by J on 5/5/23The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

Awesome band, but didn't appreciate the mix. Overly reverb-y and at one point the volume became significantly louder. The volume was loud but comfortable for most of the set until that point, and myself and others around were noticeably uncomfortable.

horrible sound for a great band

by Bummed bro on 4/24/23Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Seats - Mezzanine F110 and 112 I'll be brief as i intend to write a detailed review to send directly to the venue. I've seen this band before and they sounded so good i nearly cried. I was so stoked to get to see them again and ....the sound was garbage from start to finish. from where i was seated I could tell the band was on fire and playing amazing stuff...and the sound system was muddy harsh noise the whole set. even during a solo piano moment it was harsh and bleh at best. I use nice ear plugs for shows and it sounded bad both ways - ear plugs in and out. I'm writing this for anyone else at the show who was stoked to see this band and was seeing them for the first time and who also struggled with the poor sound. DEFINITELY try to see this band again.

    Listen to their recorded music

by Jules on 4/23/23Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I have listened to Haitus Kaiyote’s music for 10 years and have always wanted to see them live but never had the opportunity. Was so excited to go but this was unfortunately one rare occasion that the recorded music is much better than live. The band does not know how to settle into a jam while riffing on a song. Just felt like they were smashing their way through every song at top speed and volume. None of them listen to each other and it’s clear that they don’t take cues from the audience either. I did appreciate that they were diligent about looking for and calling out medical emergencies in the crowd!! But just listen to their recorded music, not worth seeing live.
