About

Hadestown at the Walter Kerr Theatre

While based on the oft-told Greek myth of Eurydice and Orpheus' descent into hell, Anaďs Mitchell's folk opera ‘Hadestown' just might deliver audiences to musical-theater heaven. A dozen years in the making, ‘Hadestown' was first performed as a stage production in Mitchell's home state of Vermont. In 2010, to enthusiastic acclaim, she released it as a concept album featuring indie-folk stars Ani DiFranco, Greg Brown, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, the Low Anthem's Ben Knox Miller, and the Haden triplets (Petra, Rachel, and Tanya). Mitchell expanded the album into an Americana musical quilt with the help of Tony Award–winning director Rachel Chavkin (‘Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812'). It premiered off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop on May 6, 2016, and ran through July 31. March 2019 marks its Broadway debut, with opening night planned for April 17.

About the Show

In ‘Hadestown,' Mitchell inventively updates the myth of Eurydice and Orpheus to a post-apocalyptic setting reminiscent of the Great Depression. The narrator, Hermes (Tony-nominated André De Shields), calls it "an old tale from way back when." While economic misery and environmental calamities afflict the land, the underworld has become a model of full employment thanks to Hades, who wants to construct a wall to protect the jobs of his mining minions.

While Eurydice (Tony-nominated Eva Noblezada) seeks economic security in the overworld, her beloved Orpheus — played by denim-clad singer-songwriter Reeve Carney, originator of the title role in Broadway's ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' — possesses a more poetic soul. Amber Gray plays Persephone, queen of the underworld, who cherishes the summers she is allowed to spend "on top." When Hades (Patrick Page, the Green Goblin in ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark') convinces Eurydice to join him in Hadestown, Persephone convinces her husband to give the couple one last chance to leave the underworld together.

A blend of classic storytelling and contemporary concerns, ‘Hadestown' reverberates with relevance. It's also a heartfelt celebration of American music in all its emotional richness and down-to-earth pleasures. And don't worry: In ‘Hadestown,' the devil has only some, not all, of the best tunes.

Very enjoyable evening. Even though we had the stand by for Persephone, she was outstanding.

Greek theatre meets Broadway. A unique experience that draws you in, subtly at first, then compelling. To hell and back never felt so good, even if the ending is .....I won’t give it away.

Everything about this production is top notch. The play and score is an interesting and fresh take on the classic myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Great acting, singing, dancing and musical performances throughout. The Walter Kerr Theatre provided a great venue for the experience. I plan to see it again when I get a chance to do so.

    Transcendent

by CaroRoma on 11/24/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Such an amazing show. I had high expectations-and this exceeded them. A beautiful tale of love and loss, cycles, seasons and the way they affect us. Light and darkness played with so masterfully it takes your breath away. I wanted to watch it all again as soon as it finished.

    Mind shattering

by Barbara Knight on 11/24/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

First, the voices- so full, so differentiated, so basic to the story. Then the dancers- so diverse in shape, size, ethnicity and yet coordinated in their contribution to the story. Left us gasping at intermission. So why not five stars?- the second act. Still amazing talent but the story slowed and could have ended with more clarity and drama. Still clearly “best musical”. Thrilling to see how musicals have evolved.

    Anniversary return to the underground

by Cat on 11/24/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

My boyfriend and I had seen the show separately and both found it utterly transformative and glorious, so we had to go together for our 8-year anniversary. The seat cushions at the Walter Kerr are probably still soaked in our tears. And we were lucky enough to have gotten a flower when they were handed out after the show. Perfect anniversary, perfect piece of theatre, please run forever.

This show is all about unique voice...the most melodious lead and deep Hades and unique and impish Hermès. Go see it if you like unique and spellbinding. Loved all of it. I’m a jazz lover so good to have this music so well paired with the story. I loved it!

    Hadestown - Nov 2019

by JCB on 11/20/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Show was fantastic, great music & staging. Seating is tight, not comfortable if you’re over 5’8. Lines for washrooms were insane, badly managed and downright dangerous.

    Mind blowing, extraordinary!!

by MelB on 11/20/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

We took my daughter to the show for her birthday without knowing much about it after hearing glowing reviews and its Tony win...and...WOW!! If you have the opportunity to see this especially with Andre De Shields, see it, see it, see it!! He gives a master class in acting and stage presence. We were honored by his performance. As my husband said, every once in a while something surpasses the hype. Truly awe inspiring.

    Best Theatre Experience

by Ric on 11/19/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Everything about our experience at Hadestown was spectacular. The classic Broadway theatre was a perfectly intimate setting for a grand epic told on in a very personal way. The performances were truly moving. A couple of tips, the restroom lines can be VERY long but there is a disabled restroom available downstairs stage left. Seats are very snug, and there is no coat check room so keep that in mind if you're visiting during the colder months.

‘Hadestown’ is a most compelling, riotous rendition of the Eurydice and Orpheus myth. It must be told and retold and this is the best retelling ever. The cast is outstanding and they really deliver the goods. A perfect production. Everyone associated with this production should be proud.

    Hadestown was perfect!

by JaneD on 11/18/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

My entire trip to NYC from California was primarily to see the original cast of Hadestown. I’ve listened to the soundtrack at least a hundred times. Expectations were high. I was absolutely blown away. They sounded BETTER live! The staging was gorgeous. I sat third row center and felt completely immersed in the story. I have already bought tickets to take my daughter to see it with me again next summer. This show is a must see!!!
