About

Hadestown at the Walter Kerr Theatre

While based on the oft-told Greek myth of Eurydice and Orpheus' descent into hell, Anaďs Mitchell's folk opera ‘Hadestown' just might deliver audiences to musical-theater heaven. A dozen years in the making, ‘Hadestown' was first performed as a stage production in Mitchell's home state of Vermont. In 2010, to enthusiastic acclaim, she released it as a concept album featuring indie-folk stars Ani DiFranco, Greg Brown, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, the Low Anthem's Ben Knox Miller, and the Haden triplets (Petra, Rachel, and Tanya). Mitchell expanded the album into an Americana musical quilt with the help of Tony Award–winning director Rachel Chavkin (‘Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812'). It premiered off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop on May 6, 2016, and ran through July 31. March 2019 marks its Broadway debut, with opening night planned for April 17.

About the Show

In ‘Hadestown,' Mitchell inventively updates the myth of Eurydice and Orpheus to a post-apocalyptic setting reminiscent of the Great Depression. The narrator, Hermes (Tony-nominated André De Shields), calls it "an old tale from way back when." While economic misery and environmental calamities afflict the land, the underworld has become a model of full employment thanks to Hades, who wants to construct a wall to protect the jobs of his mining minions.

While Eurydice (Tony-nominated Eva Noblezada) seeks economic security in the overworld, her beloved Orpheus — played by denim-clad singer-songwriter Reeve Carney, originator of the title role in Broadway's ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' — possesses a more poetic soul. Amber Gray plays Persephone, queen of the underworld, who cherishes the summers she is allowed to spend "on top." When Hades (Patrick Page, the Green Goblin in ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark') convinces Eurydice to join him in Hadestown, Persephone convinces her husband to give the couple one last chance to leave the underworld together.

A blend of classic storytelling and contemporary concerns, ‘Hadestown' reverberates with relevance. It's also a heartfelt celebration of American music in all its emotional richness and down-to-earth pleasures. And don't worry: In ‘Hadestown,' the devil has only some, not all, of the best tunes.

    Want the soundtrack now!

by K. B. on 2/26/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Hadestown was an intriguing event, true to Greek mythology. I was taken aback when the three women in front of me were surprised by the ending (but I was careful not to tell my seatmate the entire myth beforehand). The music was good, the set sparse but effective and the lighting design was masterful. The cast had several standouts; we were especially impressed with Eva Noblezada, Patrick Page and Andre De Shields; a little less impressed with Reeve Carney. Hadestown was the reason for a four-hour plane trip to NYC, but, surprisingly, was not our favorite of the four shows we saw. Still glad I went but once might have been enough.

    Phenomenal!

    by G. F. on 2/26/20

The cast was wonderful! The theatre left a little to be desired as it was cold and we were stuck outside until 7:30(we got there at 7 and the show was at 8). When we did get in, we were whisked straight to our seats, so there wasn't a chance to buy souvenirs. The show itself was incredible. Our seats were bought 3 days before the show and relatively cheap so I worried that we wouldn't be able to see. Orchestra Row L on the end. We had a wonderful view.

The music, live, was incredible..a treat, since I've been listening to the soundtrack on repeat since I've bought it. This music grabbed me from the moment I heard it last year, and didn't let me go !

Great Music, Great Performances, Sad relevant story

by Gloria on 2/25/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

We attended for a birthday celebration not knowing exactly what to expect. We were seated on orchestra right - great view of the performance. The story - a sad story - was well played out by the actors with fantastic voices and a very professional orchestra. The sets were amazing and were leveraged well to capture the darkness of the story. In today's time of darkness the shining light of the story and a reminder to us all is Love and never doubt yourself.

The show was a true delight. It was a non-stop song fest from beginning to end. We sat in awe through the entire tour de force of a show. Highly recommend catching this show. I would see it again and again.

    Hadestown-not so hot

by Dee on 2/22/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Out seats were fantastic. 4 rows from the front and center. The acting was spot on. The actors did their parts well. The music and lyrics were not catchy and lacked more creativity. The costumes could have had more zest but instead were just okay. There was only one set change. For a musical, i found I had to work hard on following the lyrics which were sometimes hard because of the accent that was used by the main lead who is the Messenger in the show. This show was not worth the amount of money I spent on three great seats. I should have gone to see something else.

This musical beautifully and creatively tells the love stories of Hades and Persephone and of Orpheus and Eurydice. The musical is jazzy, the costumes are elegant, and the choreography is breathtaking. I cannot wait to see it again!

    Riveting.

by C. T. on 2/18/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

A beautiful telling of a Greek myth. Loved the New Orleans/steampunk feeling. The intimate nature of the smaller theater was perfect for the romantic tale. It’s not the widest appealing show on broadway but it is one of the best shows I’ve seen. If you’re looking for big band ultra glam, I wouldn’t think this would be your cup of tea. For thoughts and feels, Be sure to check out Hadestown.

    Great show

by Tug on 2/18/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

First of all, I’m a trombone player and this is the greatest part for a trombone player ever. The show was fabulous. The way the story was presented was sensible and understandable. The music, choreography, costumes, sets and actors were all you could ask for. I’ve seen a couple of hundred Broadway shows and this on is in the top ten.9

    Amazing show!

by K&E DB on 2/18/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

It's no wonder Hadestown won a Tony for best musical in 2019. Wow! The vocal range and level of talent are mind boggling. Our favorite performer was Eva Noblezada. Her voice is spectacular!
