Everything opened the show, and immediately the funk overtones drove through you and made your feet move and your body sway. The guitar work was excellent, the horn section highlighting the melodies and added a nice overlay, and the rhythm section churned. I have not had the privilege of seeing everything in literally years, and they were just a really fun experience. If you have never seen everything before, make a point of seeing them soon.
emmet opened with Stealing from the Joneses (sic), Eric's first licks filling the 9:30 club with the unmistakable notes of the song flowing lightly into the air until Scotty's bass and Todd's rhythm guitar joined in, creating a wall of sound guided by Taimer on the drums. The show was mesmerizing, and covered tunes from the early years as well as the albums from the Sony era. Todd's voice was full throated and true, even hitting the super high notes from "Motorway". Eric and Scotty's harmonies were done so well....it was just a really good show for all.
"8:45" , "I'll Be Fine (Boones Farm Wine)" , "Parking Lot"made the playlist and were pitch perfect. Adding to the way back machine vibe, a beautiful rendition of "Pretty" was served up as a dessert! Taimer unleashed his vocal prowess on "99 Red Balloons" always a crowd pleaser. Derek's piano work was really nice, and added a depth to many of the songs. "So Lonely (Down Under)" featured Eric's vocals, and the song was joined in by Everything's drummer, lead singer, and guitarist, while featuring a guitar dance between Eric and his counterpart from Everything. Taimer surrendered his drum kit to Everything's drummer while he played the Tabla. Todd promised the next song would be "We are the World" but we were spared. In short, on a cold Saturday night in January, the 9:30 club hosted an excellent concert.
