Venue was excellent, performers were frankly all stars. The level of performance here was incredible and really enjoyable to watch. Found myself singing along several times and very involved in the characters.
I have two main complaints, both of which are the musical's content itself, not the performance thereof (again, performance was excellent).
1) The musical itself is more dance-focused than plot-focused. As one example, toward the end there is a 17 minute ballet which more or less recaps the entire musical to that point. The style feels very old-timey, so may be appropriate with the original material (admittedly have not sen the original movie), but would love for the musical itself to focus more on the plot, plot development, and dialogue rather than explaining so much of it solely through dance.
2)The musical doesn't really give us a reason to root for the main character - especially in the era of Me Too, it's clear his actions are harassment and the fact that he somehow wins over the girl this way is a problematic plot point. The harassment in the musical isn't sexist - he in turn is coerced into a relationship by a woman who has power over his career - but acknowledgment of how problematic these actions are is clearly missing from the musical plot, and in fact characters are rewarded for this behavior. Interestingly, they frequently accuse another character, Henri, of taking advantage of his position and money to get the girl, but he's one of the few characters who actually doesn't seem to be doing that - he seems naive about the power differential, and steps back when he realizes the dynamic may be influencing Lise's decisions more than he'd thought. In contrast, Jerry and Caroline seem to be aggressive and/or predatory and less willing to listen and act on the problems they are causing others, a far more problematic presentation.
To sum up, the musical was excellently performed and would recommend to anyone interested in old-timey musicals. Would recommend the program/cast somehow acknowledge the unhealthy dynamics of the characters presented in the musical, and put them in context.
