VERY Disappointing
James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago
We've been waiting 3 years to see this and were so disappointed by this production. Definitely not worth the time and money spent. We're involved with some local youth theater programs and I'm confident that I could assemble a better cast, character for character, just from the people I know personally through those groups, friends, and family. Granted, we know some really talented people, but I’m not paying “Chicago in Broadway” prices to watch them! The sound was bad - there were moments where the volume would drop suddenly. Not like mic problems, but almost like a built-in gain limit. It was weird. The musicians were amazing, but were victims of the weird soundboard stuff. I think we had an alternate Evan because it was a matinee and none of us liked his voice much so not liking the main character’s singing voice is a problem! His falsetto was actually really beautiful, but his chest and mixed voice wasn’t my fave - sounded almost muppetish, but everyone has different preferences. Zoe was fine, but inconsistent. Alana was a little too popish, voice-cracky for me (I know it’s a popular style, but I don’t care for it). Jared & Larry were pretty flat characters. Heidi was pretty good and did really well on “So Big, So Small.” Cynthia was consistent and did well. Connor was also very consistent, but I could name a dozen guys right now who would do equally as well or better. The ensemble struggled to blend and I don’t know how much of that was clashing singing styles, i.e., pop, pop-rock, Broadway, but it was weird for a professional group. In the end no one blew us away. “You Will Be Found” was good, but didn’t really come together until the unison part after the social media voiceovers.

It was not a great time.
James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago
I couldn't make the first show that I bought tickets for on the 22nd due to severe weather conditions. They could not issue me a refund or an exchange to the show at a later date. I was unable to sale the tickets also. I went ahead and purchased tickets again and the seats at the theatre were so small that I had to get bench seats at the back. The lines were so long for the concessions and restrooms that we had to miss a large portion of the second act. Parking was an issue and I received a $70 parking ticket when the show was over.

Enjoyable
James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago
My husband and I both enjoyed the performance but had difficulty hearing the main character who played Evan. We were in the fifth row. Also, the ending was disappointing, although no fault of the actors.

Emotional experience as a single parent with an only child
James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago
Was an amazing experience. Had heard many of the songs from my 10 year olds playlist and to see it live was an experience for both her and I. Amazing cast, amazing experience!

Amazing
James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago
Seeing the performance live gave me a whole new feeling about the story. The songs and singing performance left me with chills while experiencing the emotions of each character. The laughter came and tears were shed. Great story, Great message and performances. I think everyone has had the feelings of being lost and alone at some point in life. I know I could definitely relate. I sometimes catch myself saying many days to myself, since I learned about Dear Evan Hansen story.. "Dear Evan Hansen, today is going to be a great day and here's why: because today at least you're you and, well, that's enough." And no qoute has ever been so true, because it is enough and I am enough. Hope they come back again to Chicago, would love to see it again ❤️

Amazing Show!
James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago
Dear Evan Hansen was absolutely amazing! You will pretty much feel every emotion during this show and I loved it. I was in love with the transitions between scenes. It allowed a constant flow. It was perfectly cast and you can feel the connection between the actors.

Trite, simple waste of money
James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago
This was basically simple, trite cotton candy theatre.
A letter that was never meant to be seen, a lie that was never meant to be told, a life he never dreamed he could have. Evan Hansen is about to get the one thing he's always wanted: a chance to finally fit in. DEAR EVAN HANSEN is the deeply personal and profoundly contemporary musical about life and the way we live it.
DEAR EVAN HANSEN has struck a remarkable chord with audiences and critics everywhere, including The Washington Post who says DEAR EVAN HANSEN is "Theatrical magic. One of the most remarkable shows in musical theatre history." The New York Times calls it "a breathtaking knockout of a musical." And NBC Nightly News declares the musical "an anthem resonating on Broadway and beyond."
DEAR EVAN HANSEN features a book by Tony Award winner Steven Levenson, a score by Grammy®, Tony® and Academy Award® winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land, The Greatest Showman), and direction by four-time Tony Award nominee Michael Greif (Rent, Next to Normal).
