About

DEAFHEAVEN IN CONCERT:

Deafheaven merge the extreme sounds of black metal and shoegaze to create an aural onslaught guaranteed to blow ticket buyers away. Guitarist Kerry McCoy pours pure blood, sweat, and tears into his hellfire riffs and pummeling breakdowns before exposing an unexpected fragility with soothing instrumental interludes and shimmering ambient passages. These moments of calm lull audiences only briefly, before vocalist George Clarke unleashes his blood-curdling scream to ratchet the intensity back up to 10. Clarke dances around the stage on introspective and self-loathing anthems like “Sunbather”, “Dream House”, and “Unrequited”, while frenzied fans mosh along to the mayhem.  Deafheaven’s soul searching, speaker-destroying brand of blackgaze gives fans seeking a brutal live sound a hard-driving bang for their buck.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

After leaving San Francisco grindcore band Rise of Caligula, vocalist George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy began to explore the more exotic fringes of metal in 2010 with Deafheaven. Using borrowed equipment and $500 of studio time, the duo recorded an untitled demo album before forming a full band. By year’s end they were signed to the Deathwish Inc. label, which released the group’s 2011 debut album Roads to Judah. The record received a warm response, though it was nothing compared to the overwhelming acclaim for their 2013 sophomore album Sunbather. Openly dealing with the band members’ insecurities and personal issues, the album was named best of the year by influential outlets like Metacritic and Treble. Unfazed by the hype, Deafheaven have kept the axe to the grindstone, thrilling live audiences with their extreme performances and stellar recorded material, including 2015’s New Bermuda.

    Incredible show

by Michael on 12/19/23Stubb's Waller Creek Amphitheater - Austin

Best show I’ve ever been to honestly, absolutely incredible from beginning to end. All three acts were phenomenal, but Deafheaven blew it out of the water. The energy in the venue was truly something else, and I’ll never forget this show as long as I live. Absolutely magical.

    Deafheaven/Touche Amore/Gatecreeper

    by Cerrato9 on 12/17/23Summit - Denver

Show was incredible. Doors at 7, usually have to wait the obligatory hour until start, but Gatecreeper came on at 7:30. Their brand of blackened hardcore had the venue in motion, with frontman Chase Mason's guttural barks igniting the pits. The songs were succinct, precise, and heavy as Kong's Balls. They even graced the crowd with a new song off their upcoming album. Their set had me wondering what could possibly top their performance. Touche Amore arrived shortly after and did their best to prove me wrong. Frontman Jeremy Bolm is a professional ring leader, enticing the crowd with anthemic sing alongs, song after song. It pains me to say this was the first time I've seen them, and they made me an instant fan. The highlight of the show was "Reminders"and Bolm's comment about the "dude with the At the Gates shirt"crowd surfing to their most poppy song. Great stuff. Deafheaven needs no introduction. This being the tenth anniversary of Sunbather, I was hoping (expecting) them to play that classic front to back, and that's exactly what they did. This is the 3rd time seeing them, and they get better each time. How George Clarke gets to that point in his vocal delivery, that consistently, is awe-inspiring. The mix of blackened metal and shoegaze is an incredible live experience, one that any fan of heavy music should check out.

    A perfect performance

by Steve on 12/2/23Theatre of Living Arts - Philadelphia

Deafheaven played Sunbather from start to finish with beautiful visual accompaniments, and encored with "Brought to the Water". Truly a perfect performance, could not have asked for more.

    Baroness and Zeal & Ardor

by Todd on 4/2/19The Sylvee - Madison

Zeal & Ardor's avant-garde approach made for a very entertaining opening band. Always nice to be exposed to something new and interesting from an opener. Baroness delivered as was expected. I was glad to see a solid crowd, so hopefully they will return, yet again, to Madison. Deafheaven drove the other three members of my group out the door. They are a fast rising band, but unless one is into the blackened vocal style, it can be a challenging ride.
