Cousin Stizz In Concert
In just a few years, Cousin Stizz went from being a troubled teen to turning his life around and becoming one of Boston's most esteemed rappers. Born Stephen Goss in 1992 in Boston, Stizz grew up in the Dorchester neighborhood. He received the name Cousin Stizz from a childhood friend.
At a very young age, he had to deal with trauma, when one of his closest friends was shot to death. Stizz had trouble dealing with it, and as a result, his parents gave him a choice between going to military school or attending a high school in the suburbs. Shortly after, he attended Reading Memorial High School in Reading, Massachusetts.
In his late teens, Stizz started rapping and joined a group called Pilot Nation, and with them he entered the Boston rap scene. He became friends with local artist Michael Christmas, who started blowing up in 2013, causing Stizz to take his own career and ambitions seriously. The following year, he dropped his first single, "Shoutout."
In 2015, Cousin Stizz dropped his first mixtape,‘Suffolk County,' which received 12 million streams on SoundCloud. He scored high-profile listeners from the release, including Drake, who put the song on a playlist for his own birthday party. Stizz put out his second mixtape, ‘MONDA,' the following year, and started to gain local acclaim in Boston.
Because of the success of his first two mixtapes, he scored a deal with RCA Records, where he quickly recorded and released ‘One Night Only.' The 2017 studio LP featured Offset, G-Eazy, and more. "Headlock" (featuring Offset) was a massive streaming hit, reaching No. 12 on Billboard's Next Big Sound chart. In December 2018, Cousin Stizz was named "Artist of the Year" at the Boston Music Awards. He was the first hip-hop musician to receive the honor.
