About

About Cincinnati Music FestivalĀ

Cincinnati is proud of its rich musical history. Most notably, the Queen City was home to the storied label King Records, whose imprint, Federal, issued the hit single "Please, Please, Please" from James Brown's first band, the Famous Flames.Ā

It's quite fitting, then, that Cincinnati is also home to the Cincinnati Music Festival Presented by P&G, one of the longest-running (and most successful) R&B and soul concerts in the U.S. Cofounded by promoter Dino Santangelo and George Wein initially as a jazz-focused festival, the multi-day event now consistently draws the genre's biggest names. For example, Brown eventually performed at the event ā€” as have other soul and R&B luminaries, including Whitney Houston and her cousin, Dionne Warwick, along with Luther Vandross, Marvin Gaye, Patti LaBelle, Mary J. Blige, Usher, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Al Green, Maxwell, and Ella Fitzgerald.

The Cincinnati Music Festival Presented by P&G dates back to 1962, when it launched as the Ohio Valley Jazz Festival. The inaugural year of the fest boasted amazing talent ā€” to name a few players, Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington, and Sonny Rollins. The event moved around a bit in its early years, first from the Carthage Fairgrounds to Crosley Field ā€” where, in 1964, John Coltrane, Count Basie, Lou Rawls, Aretha Franklin, and Dizzy Gillespie performed ā€” and later from there to Riverfront Stadium, before the event eventually settled in to its current location of Paul Brown Stadium. Along the way, the concert expanded its focus to include soul, R&B, and even hip-hop, which grew its audience even more.

The festival also became known for many years as the Macy's Music Festival before being rechristened the Cincinnati Music Festival Presented by P&G in 2015. What hasn't changed, however, is a commitment to booking top-notch talent that reaches multiple generations of music fans in Cincinnati and beyond.Ā

    Wonderful

by Mrs. Crystal Ball on 7/26/23

We had a timeeeee every single night!!!! And, many many thanks to P&G for blessing us with free samples of necessities! I even won a Swiffer in the dance off! šŸ„° The only recommendation is to put portable restrooms on the ground level. Keep in mind there is an older audience that may have issues climbing flights of stairs. See ya next year!!

    Good couldā€™ve been better

    by AngieBitsMe on 7/25/23

I didnā€™t like the split stages. I would have rather one stage performance and they should upgrade the stage so the artist come out in the middle. Try something different with the Stages, I.e. a new middle platform stage.

Overall good time. This was my 3rd straight year at the music festival. Would like to see a dj between sets to set it off a little better. The city is nice with lots of historical places to visit.

Hip Hop comes to the Music Festival

    by Tay on 7/25/23

I enjoyed all the acts for both days! I loved seeing Gerald Albright. Midnight Star was a blast from the past. My pleasant surprise on Friday night was Jodeci! Theyā€™ve done their thing, and they sound like themselves!!!! Jill Scott live performance was amazing! Al Green is always good to see. Heā€™ll first give you the gospel, then he takes you back down memory lane. Saturday was fire as well!! The smooth jazz sounds of Norman Brown was soothing to the ears. Avery Sunshine was great! My first time seeing her perform. The P Funk Connection was okay, just not the same without George Clinton. Babyface done all the number one hits he sang, and wrote for others. Snoop Dogg was a beast!!!!! Classic Hip Hop artists need to be invited more, but couldnā€™t understand why he was headlining instead of Babyface. Overall, I loved it! Canā€™t wait until next year.

    Friday and Saturday Attendee

    by LJR on 7/25/23

Friday night lineup wasn't great. Saturday night was so much better than I expected. The DJ played great party music in between, my favorite comedian (Dave Chapelle) introduced Snoop, and Snoop kept the energy in the crowd going! I also enjoyed Babyface's performance of his own originals mixed with performances of songs he wrote for others. What a show! I can't wait for next year!
