    poor

    by r. m. on 5/29/22Toyota Oakdale Theatre - Wallingford

Looking forward to a fun show, a family Christmas gift, 16 tickets. Unfortunately, I can't review the show. As we drove into the driveway of the venue we were pleasantly greeted by an employee telling us "the show was cancelled 10 min ago for unforeseen circumstances." I am aware that a performance was done earlier in the day without incident. This was very disappointing to my entire family. Thankfully, we only drove 35 minutes to the venue. I read comments on the FB page of people driving 90 minutes!! I certainly hope to see a refund in a timely manner.

Show was great, venue was disappointing

by LP on 5/25/22Toyota Oakdale Theatre - Wallingford

The show was great- perfect for kids, they were not bored and music and production was great. I will say that they missed out on so many marketing opportunities- no programs? We had no idea who was in the show! Secondly, no chocolate bars for sale? Would have liked to see so much more from that stand point. The venue had some issues going for them as well, but that is not the shows fault.

    Oh no!

by Yakoosawoo on 5/25/22Toyota Oakdale Theatre - Wallingford

Very disappointed! Educator who read story, watched tv show and created curriculum for my 2nd grade students as we excitedly discussed my favorite story, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.. I was dressed in vibrant colors to represent candy as I headed to the venue to see the play. To my surprise, the event had just been cancelled 20 minutes ago. Before this, when I bought the tix I didn't see a show for the previous day. It popped up a little later that afternoon. I immediately called to explain, and ask to change days but my request was flat out refused. Now I had to miss my most favorite show in the world after I taught about it for at least two decades.... I want to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!!! (minor meltdown) I was so close....

Great play, should be age limits

by Patty on 5/24/22Toyota Oakdale Theatre - Wallingford

We had 6 people in our party, our only issue was a uncontrolled 5 year in front of us that would not sit still, ( up and down, and over the seat) and the parents didn’t seem to care.

    Ok

by Dino on 5/23/22Toyota Oakdale Theatre - Wallingford

Well let me start by saying it was very impressive that a young child can learn all those lines and songs however at times it was so high pitch and screechy we could hardly understand it.. It was very long and there was also a technical problem in the second half and they stopped the show.. All and all it was ok..

    AWESOME

by Englishrose on 4/27/22North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North Charleston

We thought the show was AWESome with only 2 negatives. Firstly, the orchestra played much TOO LOUD that we could hardly make out the Actors voices, just picking up on a few words. Secondly, the little ballerina girl whose dad was a Russian Millionaire was TORN APART by the Squirrels, so one had her arms and another her legs and another her head, UGGGH!! not appropriate for little children in the audience, especially as this is a children's story!!! The audience all gasped at this including us, we couldn't get over it.

    Absolutely wonderful!

by Grandma Julie on 4/27/22North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North Charleston

I took my daughter and four-year-old granddaughter to see this play. It was just wonderful. You know that it must REALLY be good, when it can capture the attention of a four-year-old from beginning to end. The actors were just great. I enjoyed this one much more than the one I saw in NYC. The venue was perfect.

    Fun but not for kids

by Jenlhart on 4/26/22North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North Charleston

This is my favorite story of all time so I was expecting to absolutely adore this musical and for the most part, it was a satisfying trip into nostalgia and imagination. One major shortcoming was the lack of a warning to parents about ensuring the show was appropriate for their children. Though some of us realized it was going to be truer to the book than the original movie, I think a lot of parents thought the musical would be as appropriate for young children as the movie was, but the story is actually quite dark and seeing it performed live made some of that darkness feel very stark. I was seated next to a young girl of about 7 whose parents were obviously not aware of the darker, more adult-specific content and it affected my enjoyment of the performance to see and hear how distraught the little girl was at a few different times during the show (specifically the violent deaths of Violet and Veruca and reference to “child death” in another scene). I could tell her parents were surprised and upset too, so I wish there would be a warning or disclosure added to the event details so parents will know this show isn’t geared toward kids and can make age-appropriate choices for their children. There were also a few lags in the sound that made it hard to hear the first word or two of each line for each new character who spoke - almost as if all of the actors’ mics were turned off until it was time for each to speak again and there was a 1-2 second lag on mics coming back on each time. However, despite these couple of issues, it was an enjoyable show for adults. The music was really good, with a nice mix of old favorites from the original film and new songs exclusive to the musical. The acting and performances (particularly by Willy Wonka and Mrs. Bucket) were really well done, The scenery and lighting were often spectacular (the Chocolate Room was pure magic!) and the way the Oompa Loompas were portrayed was an absolute delight. Super glad we went!
