About Camping World Kickoff

The Camping World Kickoff is college football's way of saying hello. Held on opening weekend in Orlando's Camping World Stadium — formerly known as the Citrus Bowl — the game is the leftmost bookend to the season, with two prominent teams playing on a neutral site in a bowl-like atmosphere.

College football has a way of making novelties seem like long-standing traditions. So it is with the Camping World Kickoff, which debuted in 2016 with a shootout between the No. 4 Florida State Seminoles and the No. 11 Ole Miss Rebels. The Seminoles rallied from 22 points down thanks to the arm and legs of their redshirt freshman quarterback, Deondre Francois. After a year off, the Kickoff returned in 2018 with the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide, the defending national champions, routing the Louisville Cardinals, 51-14.

If the game feels like it's always been around, that might have something to do with the Depression-era stadium. Owned and operated by the city of Orlando, Camping World Stadium is one of college football's classic venues, occasionally maligned but reliable and home to a lot of memorable football, Monster Jams, soccer and even cameos in the TV series Coach. Built in 1936 under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration, what was then called Orlando Stadium had a stadium capacity of 8,900. As college football grew, so did the stadium. By the end of the century, the Florida Citrus Bowl, as it was known, was a fully modern, 65,000-capacity facility. It got another series of upgrades and, in 2016, a new name. Today, Camping World Stadium visitors will find clean sightlines and plenty of tailgating opportunities near the stadium.

    Stadium review

by NeededADrink on 9/9/18Camping World Stadium - Orlando

We were really excited to be going to the season opening game. This was our first time at Camping World Stadium. The traffic was a crazy cluster, but we expected that. What we didn't expect was the limited beverage selection ...and that most venders ran out of water before the 2nd quarter. There were half empty coolers that could have been refilled but weren't (other half had beer). Some vendors managed to get some more water, but it was hot, and then they ran out again. Only offering 3 types of sodas was very disappointing, and what is with not letting us keep the cap on the bottle? Carrying several bottles with no caps created a problem of its own. We were very disappointed with the food selection as well. Need more variety and don't run out before halftime!

    Alabama vs. Louisville 2018 Kickoff

by shallman904 on 9/8/18Camping World Stadium - Orlando

While the game itself was great, the venue all in all was horrible. The seats were super close together with no arm rests or cupholders. The food and drinks was crappy, horrible, and over priced with very little selection, even for a football game ($5 water, $5.50 ONLY Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, or Sierra Mist, $8 beer, $11 mixer, $5 peanuts, $11 chicken tenders and fries, $10 Little Caesar 4-piece mini pizza). We're huge Alabama fans, so we've been to many stadiums, and this one was definitely the worst.

Camping World Stadium/Alabama vs Louisville game

by lucysgigi on 9/7/18Camping World Stadium - Orlando

i I would not go to this stadium again. First of all, we had a hard time finding our seats, the signs were not accurate. We asked 4 (yes, FOUR) workers for help and each one gave us a different answer and had us going all over the place. My husband finally found them on his own. The seats were crappy, there was no place to put your drinks. Then, after the ball game there was no announcement as to which exits were closed, so we were told by 2 different workers which way to go, only to find the exits were blocked by other personnel. It was ridiculous. We try to go to many different stadiums and this one was definitely on the bottom of our list. We did enjoy the game, though.

    Ridiculous Security Measure

by 65Aggressor on 9/7/18Camping World Stadium - Orlando

All was great except for a stupid security policy and inadequate catering response. Upstairs the bottled drinks caps were not removed and downstairs they were. They said the bottles (plastic) were a security risk. They removed the cap on the drink and had no food carriers so you are supposed to juggle food items with an open drink or drinks. Security needs to reevaluate and be uniform in application. Security did confirm the policy when questioned.

    Bama game was awesome!

by TJO13 on 9/5/18Camping World Stadium - Orlando

We had great seats for game. Getting in was easy until my sister had to use her phone to display tickets. since there are over 57k people checking in on their smartphones. You should give people the opportunity to print out tickets instead of using smartphone. We had 11 people in our party and 9 of the tickets were on one phone. We had to make sure that all phones were charged up so we had no issues.
