About the Bluegrass Bash Demolition Derby

Each year, Louisville, Kentucky, hosts one of the crown jewels of demolition derby. The Bluegrass Bash is held annually at the Kentucky Exposition Center's historic Freedom Hall, which first opened in 1956, and has a capacity of 19,200 for shows. The Bluegrass Bash features no fewer than seven different events, including two heats of street stock (or bonestock) derbies for cars with their original class engines, swap style for souped-up engines, GM class for General Motors engines built between 1978 and 1996, plus minicars and minivans. Classic cars become wrecking balls, sedans become hatchbacks, and garishly painted vehicles become distinguishable only by the flags on their roofs in this showcase of driving excellence.

History of the Bluegrass Bash Demolition Derby

While its official origins are not fully known, demolition derby has been wowing race fans since at least the late 1950s, rising in popularity in the ensuing decades through exposure on ABC's Wide World of Sports and in film and television. Demolition derby gives fans the excitement of drivers bumping and crashing into each other, until one reigns above all others. Older, mostly American-built vehicles that would normally be sent to the wrecking yard are given one more shot at glory, with windows removed, doors welded, and holes cut into the hoods to allow for easier fire extinguishing. The sport allows for a mix of safety and excitement for both the driver and the audience.

Since 2016, the National Demolition Derby Association has held the Bluegrass Bash, bringing the best in demolition derby action to the Kentucky Exhibition Center. Each class has a cash prize for first, second and third place finishers in the derby, as well as a bonus for the "maddog," who has the best overall performance but is not necessarily the winner. If a driver wins the Maddog award while placing first in a Big Car race, they receive a cash bonus.

Entertainment packed. Food prices where to be expected. Poor ventilation. I had a tremendous headache from car smells. First time going and do not know if we will be back.

The event was great enjoyed it but the seating was terrible no leg room, everytime someone had to get out of row had to get out of seat and move to center walk way to let them in and out...definitely need more aisle room and leg room

Bigger hits in the parking lot

by Bob on 3/26/19Freedom Hall - Louisville

The officials spent more time trying to convince the drivers to hit than anything else. It was a subpar demolition derby that lacked excitement. I saw multiple people sleeping in the stands due to boredom.

    Awesome show!!

    by DIRTCAR40 on 3/26/19Freedom Hall - Louisville

I ATTENDED THE INNAGURUAL BLUGRASS BASH A FEW YEARS AGO AND IT WAS LOADS OF FUN, BUT I HAVE TO SAY, THAT IT WAS MUCH MORE STREAMLINED THIS YEAR! THE TRACK CREW WAS SPOT ON, AND THEY WERE ABLE GET THE TRACK CLEARED MUCH MORE QUICKLY, AND THEY DID A MUCH BETTER JOB AT VENTING THE ARENA FROM ALL OF THE EXAUST SMOKE. WILL DEFINATLY BE BACK HOPEFULLY AS SOON AS NEXT YEAR. ONE DRAWBACK TO FREEDOM HALL IS THAT THERE NEEDS TO BE DESIGNATED WILL CALL WINDOWS FOR PEOPLE THAT CHOOSE THAT OPTION, BECAUSE WHEN I WENT TO PICK UP MY TICKETS, ALL OF THE WILL CALL WINDOWS WERE BEING USED FOR OTHERS TO PURCHASE TICKETS AS WELL. THERE NEEDED TO BE SOME SEPERATION THERE, AS OTHERS WERE IN THE SAME SITUATION AS I WAS, AND HAD TO WAIT OVER 30+ MINS JUST TO GET TO THE WINDOW TO PICK UP ALREADY COMPLETED TRANSACTION TICKETS.

First demo of the night was a joke! They got stuck more than they hit each other. Almost walked out after that. Then they had some races and another demo that was way better! A little pricey for the joke it was of the first demo. I never saw any advertising that kids could do power wheels either. Would have been nice to know.

Too many derby cars were getting stuck in a too-moisturized dirt track!

Instead of demolition derby it was a mud bog!

by Abense on 3/6/18Freedom Hall - Louisville

Was absolutely awful, track was nothing but mud!!!! Waste of money for 7 tickets! I will NEVER go back again.. spent well over 200 dollars for a Awful Show!! They should have restarted the first class and gave them a fair chance! Also it said on Facebook it was supposed to start at 5, tickets said 530 and it didn’t start tell 7! You couldn’t even tell what the announcer was saying.... I normally don’t complain about a lot of thing but Jesus I would never waste my money on this show everrrrrrrr again!
