Big East Men's Basketball Tournament
Each March, basketball fans descend upon New York City and "The World's Most Famous Arena" to get a taste of the madness to come. Since 1983, the Big East Men's Basketball Tournament has been held at Madison Square Garden, which, in addition to being the home of the New York Rangers and Knicks, is the part-time home of the St. John's Red Storm. The fourth and current version of MSG opened in 1968, has been fully renovated twice, and currently seats 19,812 for basketball. The tournament typically takes place over four days in March.
Big East Men's Basketball Tournament History
The foundation of the Big East Conference in 1979 changed the landscape of college sports forever, bringing seven of the East Coast's best college basketball programs together under the umbrella of a single entity, before expanding and adding additional sports. The modern iteration of the Big East began in 2012, with the football-focused programs morphing into the American Athletic Conference, and the "Catholic Seven" that left adding Butler, Creighton and Xavier to create a "new" Big East with the shared history of the American. A total of 22 Big East teams have gone on to appear in the NCAA Men's Division I Final Four, with nine titles coming from Georgetown, Villanova, former members Syracuse and Louisville, and once and future member UConn.
The BIG EAST has remained a dominant force, winning three of the last seven national championships (Villanova 2016 and 2018, UConn in 2023). There have been many exciting moments in Big East tournament history. In 2009, a 3-hour, 46-minute marathon between Syracuse and UConn resulted in a six-overtime classic, with the Orange defeating the Huskies 127 to 117. In 2016, Seton Hall upset Villanova 69-67 before the Wildcats came back to win their second national championship. All 11 teams in the BIG EAST vie for the league's tournament title and automatic berth into the NCAA Championship.
It was a very competitive game right until the end. What a great experience to watch Villanova cut down the nets in person.
I had a fantastic experience at the semi-final games at Madison Square Garden for the biggest basketball tournament. This has been our 10th year and every year we enjoy ourselves . Thank you to the people that work at Madison Square Garden in the security personnel it was a fantastic experience
It took the smaller schools to catch up to the talented biggest schools in the new-ish Big East configuration of all Catholic universities, but the whole group is now playing at a competitive level and every game is just great basketball. I get more excited about this conference tournament than even the NCAA big dance later in the month. Great, great few evenings of men's hoops. And, the women's tournament was even better this year in Chicago!
Great time! Good seats! Get in and out efficiently, seats comfy, greatest show on Earth on the most famous arena in the world!
Lots of fan chemistry and excitement. Venue great and updated.
Being a long time St John's fan I went to see them paly against Xavier. I got to see a second game too. So how could you go wrong!
This tournament is full of tradition and excitement. This year is no different. As a member of the NOVA nation, I truly enjoyed and marvelled this hugh victory.
Villanova dominated from the start, but crowd was 90 percent Villanova supporters so the atmosphere was electric.
Very easy to purchase and print. The ushers had no issues with the tickets
Ordering tickets with the "pick from map" option was very easy and smooth. MSG was a great place to watch a game and the facilities were very clean. All of the staff was very friendly and helpful.
Great event in a great venue. I love passion and competition .
Basketball was superb, but the Garden, even after the renovation, is not a premier facility anymore. Seating is much too cramped, and not designed for the increased size of today's Americans. If you're of above average height, your knees are crammed into the seat or glass in front of you, and if anyone with a large ass sits next to you, the entire event is endured like a sardine. Folks with an ETOH appetite continually entering and leaving to either fill or empty their bladders creates an intolerable situation if you're sitting in their path to the aisle.
Madison Square Garden is made for college hoops. Tournament and surroundings were awesome
Great game! I was in the very last row of the balcony section but I didn't care! I was in & still screaming like I was court side! Great atmosphere; Jumbotron & screens helped me see the action up close. MSG is the best!
What a great game. Great atmosphere for a college basketball game. Very loud crowd that was fully into every moment of the game. Was great to see Seton hall beat Villanova. The big east tournament is amazing, hard fought tough, fun games. I had a great time.
If you have never been, it is a great experience. Even if you are not a huge basketball fan you will have a great time. Lots of local schools, plus few from Midwest. Lots of great games, tickets reasonable.
It was a great game. Unfortunately however a large segment of the fans seemed to be highly intoxicated and belligerent. I realize that there were many college students and this is what they do. Had I taken that into consideration prior I would not have attended. Needless to say I won't be back next year.
SHU won which was awesome. However, my friends and I were watching the entire game in one spot standing. then with 3+ minutes left in the game the usher, who was a real jerk, made us move. I mean its the championship game, SHU hasn't won in 23 years, we were standing there the ENTIRE game and now you decide to make us move and we had to scramble to find a spot to watch the rest of the game. You couldn't kick us out earlier? No you had to wait until there was 3 minutes left in close game to act like a real ass. Luckily we were able to find a spot in the next section over to finish.
Best Tournament ever! Crowd was electric. Simply amazing!!!
Great game, Seton Hall deserved to win, but Nova fought gamely. Great atmosphere. Big East is back!
