A GOOOAL for Bendham It Like Beckham the Musical
by C.T on 1/8/20Bluma Appel Theatre at St Lawrence Centre - TorontoWe thoroughly enjoyed the Bend It Like Beckham Musical! It was just as fun and full of laughs as the movie. The music didn’t disappoint. The words in the songs made the themes of immigration and racism very clear. I was hoping to experience some upbeat Indian music and there was one particular ensemble piece that was totally fun and the ending with the live drums was an added bonus. The same theme as the movie was also part of the musical with the additional theme of love (that song was done three times a bit much) between mothers and daughters (family), between friends and lovers. It nicely tied the whole musical together. The story line was changed in parts to convey a more updated version although the setting was still 2001 which was fun. My MIL who did not know the story nor had seen the movie enjoyed every part of it as well. The actors who played Jaz and Pinky really looked like the movie stars who played the same roles so that was a nice touch. The only negative was the sound system at the theatre. Jaz’s microphone especially was thin and sounded tinny. But other than that, I would highly recommend this musical to anyone! Go see it with your daughter, with your family, with your friends...it won’t disappoint.
