Gruff Rhys Concert Schedule and Tour

Indie rock icon and former Super Furry Animals frontman Gruff Rhys continues to thrill fans of power pop with his smart songwriting and colorful performances. Rhys is a consummate showman and concertgoers can always expect the unexpected at his endlessly creative live concert shows, where he's known to bust out a solo on a toy keyboard or tell a story about his heritage with the help of a life-size doll. From sing-alongs during "Rubble Rubble" to clap-alongs on the Welsh-language "Gyrru Gyrru Gyrru", Rhys's live shows perfectly capture the celebratory spirit of his music, and fans won't want to miss him on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Welsh-born Gruff Rhys began playing in bands in his teens, eventually becoming a local hero in the early '90s as frontman of the popular Welsh band Ffa Coffi Pawb. In 1993 he formed the Super Furry Animals, a project that enjoyed tremendous success over the course of nine critically acclaimed albums that also landed 22 consecutive singles on the UK Singles Chart. After the band went on hiatus in 2010 Rhys renewed his solo career, which began in 2005 with the Welsh-language album Yr Atal Genhedlaeth.  His third album Hotel Shampoo won the Welsh Music Prize in 2011, and in 2014 he released a combination album/film/book/mobile app titled American interior that was as finely-crafted as it was ambitious. An infinitely gifted performer with an infectious sense of humor, Rhys continues to delight ticket buyers on perennial concert tours.

    Gruff was outstanding once again

by ccurt108 on 6/20/11Mercury Lounge - New York

Y Niwl deserve alot of credit. they played a very tight set before backing Gruff. Song # 6 and 19 are really good. Gruff's ability to light up the crowd was evident early - he mentioned that the performer would normally play a tune that all the crowd would recognize and then cheer the comfert of that song. But he wouldnt do that. He asked the audience to clap to the begining of Rubble Rubble(which we all did) - then he went on to play a number of older songs - King Arthur was powerful. Gurry Gurry Gurry had the crowd singing along. He also did Pwddyn Oi 1 and 2 - and then he went to somgs form the new record- Shark Ridden Waters was great - he sang the ending which is normaly played as a record - honey all over rocked - and of course - Sensations in the dark was classic . Skylon for the encore - 17 minutes long - had everyone mesmorized. As a side note. i went to Paul Smith the following Thursday and the song "Honey all Over" was playing in the store. That made my day!

Gruff Rhys and his surfer band

by Anonymous on 6/19/11Mercury Lounge - New York

Show was fantastic. Rhys brings the same fun to his lineup as his Super Furry Animals shows. His backing band also kicked major butt. Y Niwl ripped it up as the opening act and brought a 60's surfer edge to Rhys's solo work that added a special touch to the show. Having personally owned his solo recordings, Rhys doesn't merely recreate the music you already hear on CD (or MP3 or whatever). It's stylistically different and makes for a treat at the show. And quite a few pretty girls were there. An in-depth blog of the event can be read at distractedwriting.
