Cheat Codes In Concert

The Los Angeles EDM-pop trio Cheat Codes are proof that hard work is a surer guarantee of success than any shortcut — never mind what their name might suggest. The three musicians have spent years honing their chops — and honing in on the slinky future-bass anthems that they would perfect with songs like "No Promises," their 2017 smash featuring Demi Lovato.

Singer/frontman Trevor Dahl dropped out of his Oregon high school at 16 years old and signed to Atlantic as the pop project Plug in Stereo, and his earliest releases date back to 2009. St. Louis' Matthew Russell cut his teeth in various genres before linking up with the Calabasas, California, native Kevin Ford, a hip-hop producer.

After sharing bills and occasionally apartments, the three officially got their start together in 2015, featuring on the German progressive-house producer Moguai's single "Hold On." That was followed by collaborations with Robin Schulz and David Guetta, Fetty Wap & CVBZ, Quintino, Dante Klein, DVBBS, and more.

Cheat Codes zeroed in on their sound quickly, fusing the buoyant synths of tropical house with feathery trap hi-hats and finger snaps, and topping it all off with Dahl's breezily yearning vocals. With 2016's "Sex" (a clever trop-house flip of Salt-N-Pepa's "Let's Talk About Sex"), they stepped up with a legendary hook and a mood to match.

In 2018, the moods just got bigger, with a steady stream of singles that were by turns provocative (the fittingly titled "NSFW"), aspirational ("Balenciaga"), and yearning ("Home"). They even notched a remix of U2's "Love Is Bigger Than Anything in Its Way."

The group's hybrid DJ/live shows are making an impact to match, flipping between classic remixes, heart-on-sleeve ballads, and fist-in-the-air bangers, all topped by Dahl's supremely relatable vocals. As they sing on "Feels Great" — "Do you remember how it feels to be young?" If you could distill that feeling, the label on the bottle would surely say "Cheat Codes."

    No idea

by Derek on 2/14/23Big Night Live - Boston

Got to drunk and had to leave. I’d imagine it was a great time, but Jose Curervo had other plans for me.

The concert was AMAZING-they were great performers and we had the best time. Only negative was such a late start time we didn’t stay for the whole show because it didn’t start until 12:30 :(

    Fun but misleading event time

by Jack on 2/4/22Shrine at Foxwoods - Mashantucket

Good music and atmosphere inside the club, however everything else needed improvement. My ticket said it was a 9:00 show, but the club didn’t even open until 9:00 and the opener didn’t go on until at least 10:00. Confusing getting to the club because the entire rest of the building is shut down on Tuesday nights.

    Fun! Smokey!

by Princess’ Birthday Group on 9/13/21The Grand (Boston) - Boston

Overall, great experience. With the Grand being a small and intimate club, I felt very close to Cheat Codes which was very cool. If I really put some effort in, I bet I could’ve gotten a high five. The smoke that took over the room was very cool, but very scary. It blinded me and I never really knew when to expect it. The floors got a bit slippery, so I did fall, but the bruises on my knees are a small price to pay for a beautiful birthday celebration for my good friends Hannah (princess) & Abbey.

Great set up. Lots of space. Easy to get drinks. Danny Quest and Cheat Codes were really great and entertaining. Felt like a Vegas pool party.

    Should allow Re-Entry

by Marko Ace on 1/6/20Webster Hall - New York

Once you get to the event, the door patrons inform you there is no leaving and returning with your scanned ticket. You have to have a new ticket to return. I think for all events that are longer than 4 hours at the very least should allow re-entry. You might need a little break, get some fresh air or out of the loud noise for those who can't tolerate it for many hours. You might need to check on your car if it's legally parked or not, or fear it being vandalized in the dark night. More importantly you might just want to re-fuel with a slice of pizza or hot dog from a corner food cart so you can get back to the party and spend more energy. I don't think they even have a smoking section which is weird. So yes overall, they should allow re-entry for patrons. You already have your ticket scanned once and just get it scanned again or present it on re-entry. All other New York City nightclubs do ultraviolet light screening which can be done at this venue easily also. It is a huge disappointment that is severely lacking, I would avoid this venue in the future just because of the restricted option. Just go to Marquee or Avant Gardner, maybe even Lavo (worst spot but still has the option at least)
