About

Portland psych-rockers Unknown Mortal Orchestra are returning to Australia to debut their upcoming fourth album Sex and Food. The band’s newly released singles ‘Not In Love We’re Just High’ and ‘American Guilt’ – which triple j described as “Prince doing stoner rock” – deliver the hypnotic psychedelic beat they are best known for.

Fronted by visionary Ruban Nielson, the band was last in Australia for a string of sold-out headline shows in 2015 with their critically acclaimed album Multi-Love, which continued Nielson’s exploration of his art, his life, and experience with polyamory through hallucinogenic funk and R&B.

“…I wanted to embrace this abandoned genre of rock music that I keep reading is “dead” and invite people to hear with this living dead genre sounds like in the UMO universe,” Nielson said.

UMO are a force to be reckoned with on stage and this live performance will be an altogether otherworldly jam session that will leave you hot and sweaty.

“A whirlwind and entirely strange adventure that leaves you breathless and exhilarated.” Tone Deaf

Maybe if I was a fan to start

    by Freebird on 11/4/23Rialto Theatre-Tucson - Tucson

To be fair, I did not know the band before seeing them but I am a longtime psychedelic rock fan and love the genre. I found the music, at best, tedius: guitar tone quality sounded like an 8bit simulation, the music writing was uninspiring and repetative, the percussion was occasionally complex but generally more of the same, and the bass guitar lackluster. I appreciate good writing, strong hooks, guitar tone.... there was none of that. But the true fans seemed to enjoy it. My guess is that if you are young, think you are unique, and totally unfamiliar with classic psychedelic rock then you probably loved it. As for the group I came with, we left early to protect our ears.

    Meh

by Kidquick on 10/29/23White Oak Music Hall - Downstairs - Houston

the show was kind of meh… i’ve gone to a bunch of shows at White Oak, it’s actually one of my favorite venues in Houston.. however i didn’t enjoy the show as much as i thought i would; I think UMO didn’t sound as great live as i hoped they would. On top of that, it was ridiculously hot inside which kind of added to the disappointment. I’d still check them out in the future to if this was just a one-off though.

Worth the drive from states over!!

by Ïsa on 10/28/23Civic Theatre - New Orleans

To start let me give some love to the dude who played his ambience set as an opener, was REALLY great and really enjoyed seeing someone just in their element having a good time playing their music. This concert was held in a really clean venue with a bar. The music played by UMO was AMAZING! Hearing the signature rifs in certain songs was unmatched in the best way to hearing it online or vinyl. Very friendly staff too. Had an issue with a button popping off of my hat and the person at the merch table was so polite, friendly, and welcoming. Overall it was a very positive experience to attend this concert. I drove from 2 states away and hope they continue to do shows in New Orleans so I can do it again!

Best overall experience I’ve had in years!

by Jess on 10/19/23Brooklyn Bowl Nashville - Nashville

First, I have to compliment this venue! I was blown away at the layout and design of the Brooklyn Bowl. I only arrived an hour before the show (which was successfully packed in a good way) but I was still able to take advantage of the fantastic food and beer! The GA floor space and lighting were incredible! And UMO was everything I had hoped! I’m so glad I was able to experience one of my favorite bands in this setting! I never thought I would get to see this group. The rest of the crowd seemed ecstatic too. Great energy overall! I’ll absolutely be back!

by Akasia on 10/19/23Brooklyn Bowl Nashville - Nashville

Unknown Mortal Orchestra was one of my top favorite concerts! The music, the environment, the bathrooms were taken care of. I felt comfortable and was able to enjoy the show better than I even imagined!

One of the best live performers

by Rob on 4/24/23The Fillmore Philadelphia - Philadelphia

I have been to hundreds of concerts and UMO is among the best. Their live shows enhance all of the recorded material ten fold.

    SO GOOD LIVE

by Roachie on 4/9/23The Pageant - St Louis

I always develop a further appreciation for an artist(s) after seeing them live. UMO was such a fantastic performance, simplistic and warm stage decoration, welcoming - inviting - engaging and relaxed vibe on stage. So much talent, especially on the keys, drums and VOCALS. I had an amazing night and enjoyed the show that was curated. Until next time! x

    Great show poor sound balance

by Matt on 4/8/23Uptown Theater - Kansas City

UMO played a great show but unfortunately due to the room or the mixing, the base overpowered the show. The bass drum seemed to be double mic’s. All I could hear. Bit cringy on the mixing.

    Good time

by Lurp on 4/5/23Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

Love UMO! The venue is a very cool space- like the historic, architectural & decor details. But got superr crowded and the sightlines are not great. The floor slopes down so the stage is so low compared to the crowd in the back. If you're short and in the back, you're screwed. Make the stage taller! We can all look up at the band!
