About

At the Gates In Concert

These nascent Swedish death metallers showed their immense talent from the start, and some of their albums have cast long shadows in the world of their craft. Founded in Gothenburg in 1990 by members of the black/death metal group Grotesque, At the Gates came onto the scene during the height of Swedish death metal, working their way up among groups like Amon Amarth, In Flames, and Katatonia.

Their first EP, Guardians of Grief, was released on Dolores, gaining them instant notoriety. Their metal capital got them signed by Peaceville Records, which has represented groups like Darkthrone, Autopsy, Behemoth, Napalm Death, and Opeth. With the label, they released their second album, With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness. Their heavy, pummeling sound was starting to find its way among their peers.

Their major breakthrough came in 1995 with Slaughter of the Soul, an uncompromising vision of pure destruction. It would go on to be included on Rock Hard magazine's list of "The 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All Time," while Metal Injection called it one of the Top 10 Influential Heavy Metal Albums.

In 2005, it was introduced into Decibel Magazine's Hall of Fame, the second album to receive the distinction. Slaughter of the Soul charted in Japan, and the band toured in the U.S. and had videos played on MTV. Unfortunately, the sudden fame wasn't enough to hold the band together, with some of its core members leaving after the victory laps ended.

In 2007, At the Gates reunited for some shows, playing a bunch of festivals and touring with Dillinger Escape Plan, Into Eternity, Pig Destroyer, and Mayhem in 2008. They struggled with whether to release a new album, and finally did. At War with Reality received great reviews and reached No. 4 on the U.S. Top Hard Rock albums, No. 53 on the U.S. Billboard 200, and No. 9 on the Top U.S. Rock Albums.

    Greatness on stage

by Karen on 9/4/22Irving Plaza - New York

Never a complain from this concert hall. As always super organize. Thank you for bringing At the Gates to your stage so people like me can appreciate greatness on stage. It was everything seeing them play such a classic album. I am still over the moon about their performance.

    Trash metal ☠

by Patternseen on 9/2/22Irving Plaza - New York

Everything about the show was great and the ticket price was very reasonable. Both bands played tight and put on a great performance. I had seen Municipal Waste play at The Metal Alliance Tour in 2013 and I enjoyed their performance. At The Gates played a great set but. I was definitely more impressed by Municipal Waste. I really had a great time and I would highly recommend both bands to anyone who is into thrash metal.

    Never Better

by ViKinK on 9/2/22Irving Plaza - New York

One of those kinds of hard hitting line ups you didn’t think could still exist. Saw the same show at the same venue last time they were there more than a decade ago and this recent performance brought the same intensity and exhilaration. Crowd was great; they knew who they came to see. Warlike atmosphere with good ethical comradely. As for the venue and staff… typical show at Irving plaza. Nothing negative to say except that the bands ran out of merch as it was the end of the tour.

    Just... WOW

by HM-2 on 9/2/22Irving Plaza - New York

I've been listening to At The Gates for half my life and never got to see them live. When I heard they were playing Slaughter Of The Soul in it's entirety I HAD to get tickets. Before playing SOTS they played a couple newer songs and some classics like The Swarm. They put on one hell of a show and I hope I can still throw down as hard as they do when I'm that age. It's an understatement to say they blew my mind. If you have the opportunity to see them DO IT! I will definitely be seeing them again next time they're in the states.

Great performance but NIMBY bylaws ruined show.

by Jeff on 8/29/22The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Great performances by all bands. Unfortunately the bands had travel delay issued and arrived later. Due to bylaws the show had to end at 11 pm so Enforced could not play. And At The Gates had to do a shortened set.

    At the Gates was awesome!

by LeafyMcGee on 2/16/16House of Blues Orlando - Orlando

Awesome performance. Wish Disney would've allowed their sister band, The Haunted, to play as well.

At the Gates + Converge ftw

by EMRSteelmech on 4/13/15House of Blues Chicago - Chicago

At the Gates still has it. Without getting too meta, I literally caught myself a couple times during the set realizing just how into it I was and just how much I was enjoying it. And with Converge, for me that moment of clarity occurs a minimum of once per song. I've always found their music best described as "raw" and "honest" and their live show only enhances this. So much energy. Pallbearer were great too. I really dig their brand of sort of psychedelic fuzz doom metal. Vallenfyre were fine.

At The Gates - Gods that walk the earth

by asayamalaka on 3/30/15The Wiltern - Los Angeles

There's nothing else to say, this is one of the greatest bands of all time, and probably THE greatest metal band ever formed. Their tone, their technique, the music, the emotion, it's all there, and it's unbelievable. If you like half of what you hear on the album, you'll be blown away. Without a doubt one of the best shows of my life.
