INTERVALS IN CONCERT:

It's been an interesting journey for Canadian progressive metal outfit Intervals. After building a diehard fanbase with their purely instrumental jams, the group added a vocalist to the mix for 2013's A Voice Within – a move that proved divisive for both the band and its followers. It was short-lived, however – in 2015 Intervals returned to its roots, thrilling fans with the instrumental album The Shape of Colour. Throughout the band's various incarnations guitarist and founder Aaron Marshall has remained a constant, and his insane fretwork and stylistic fluidity continue to be hallmarks of the band's live shows. Marshall and his band tear through genres a mile a minute in concert, adding a hard-hitting metal edge to everything from funk and jazz to psychedelic rock. The band's talented rhythm section is airtight, but Marshall's virtuosic shredding is the real star of the show, and his ability to make the guitar sing pushes the band's instrumental jams to the limit.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Toronto-based Aaron Marshall started writing and recording as Intervals in 2011 after quitting his previous band Speak of the Devil. He performed and recorded his debut EP The Space Between by himself in his home studio, but by 2012 he was playing with a rotating group of musicians. The band's second EP, 2012's In Time, was a major hit with critics, leading to sponsorship deals with some of the biggest brands in rock including Ernie Ball and Pearl Drums. Intervals shook things up in 2013, moving bassist Mike Semesky to vocal duties, and in 2014 they released their full-length debut album A Voice Within, which featured Semesky's vocals. The record garnered praise from critics, but the new sound ultimately caused a rift within the group, and in late 2014 Marshall parted ways with Semesky and the rest of the band. He returned to his instrumental roots for Intervals' 2015 sophomore album The Shape of Colour, and has been blowing minds on tour with a new lineup ever since.

Intervals were incredible. Seeing them live after being a fan for years was such a good experience. Their live performance skills are fantastic. Four of the most talented musicians I've ever witnessed all in the same band!

The show could have lasted for hours but I will take what I can get. Intervals is who I came to see and they did not disappoint. It was like listening to the recording. Not one sour note and happy to hear a few of the new songs.

Great music! Nice Venue! Mixing wasn't consistent

by Ron G on 12/20/21The Foundry - Philadelphia

Took my son to see Thank You Scientist, primarily. All 4 bands were GREAT!!! The mixing between bands, however, was a bit challenging. Satyr and Intervals were mixed great. Thank You Scientist was quieter than the other bands and I couldn't hear the brass too well. Overall though the bar in the middle and the size of the venue was perfect! Excellent night!

    that was long wait

by Remembrance on 12/11/21The Masquerade - Purgatory - Atlanta

1st we were waiting when 1st band will start. from 6pm to 7pm I just lost my time basically. Then too many bands before headliner (3 bands before) was very long wait. Headliner started at 9:30pm I was able to listen only 30 minutes, because I had to drive home (50 min drive) and work tomorrow. Maybe 9:30pm is fine on Friday or Saturday when you should not work next day after, but on Wed. that was late. or concert should start at 6pm everything else is fine.

    Amazing Show

by JD on 12/4/21Teragram Ballroom - Los Angeles

Intervals is one of those bands that bring you that adrenaline pumping music - you bring the energy. And that’s exactly what happened when I attended their live show for the first time. It was my first time ever seeing them live and it was nothing short of amazing. Real talented folks and great to see live :) can’t wait to catch them again!

    Intervals is amazing!

by MichaelYuko on 2/19/18The Masquerade - Atlanta

I've been a casual fan of Intervals/Aaron Marshall for a few years, and I have loved most of their stuff. Going in to the concert I wasn't expected a whole lot. I knew it would be good, I just didn't expect what I experienced. That was literally the best $14 (for tickets) that I have spent in my entire life. There was 5 hours of music, and all of it was incredible. Of course, Intervals was the best, and their live music was almost just as good as the studio recordings. 10/10 would suggest going to see Intervals. Aaron Marshall is the man!
