Polyphia In Concert

Anyone who thinks they know what to expect from the prog-metal genre hasn't yet heard Polyphia. The Dallas-based group is primarily an instrumental band with some familiar reference points — Seattle group Minus the Bear's burbling math-rock riffing, glacial electronic textures, and more evocative folk fingerpicking — mixed in with funky rhythmic edges and bluesy guitar work. The 2017 single "LIT" even emphasizes jagged electric guitar riffs over plusher electronic beats.

Polyphia's 2018 album, New Levels New Devils, goes even further into uncharted territory. Opening track "Nasty" boasts intricate guest work from Jason Richardson (a guitarist known for his work with Born of Osiris and Chelsea Grin), while up-and-coming vocalist Cuco adds vocals on "So Strange." Popular single "G.O.A.T.," meanwhile, shimmers with rhythmic curlicues and latticework-like riffs that combine to create a bustling soundscape. The end result is that Polyphia — which takes its name from the word "polyphony," a musical term to describe sound built around multiple melodies — feels even more impossible to categorize.

That kind of boundary-bumping is built into the band's DNA. Guitarists Scott LePage and Timothy Henson originally formed Polyphia in 2010 while still in high school. Although the duo possesses guitar hero influences — the former is into Stevie Ray Vaughan, while the latter favors Jimi Hendrix — they also appreciate other genres, including electronic music and hip-hop. Clay Gober became bassist in 2012, while drummer Clay Aeschliman linked up with the group in 2016.

With this lineup locked into place, Polyphia exhibit the same precision live as they do on record, although they augment their focused performances with elaborate light shows and dramatic, crowd-pleasing crescendos and witty between-song banter. They've already opened for Coheed and Cambria, Between the Buried and Me, the Contortionist, and CHON, and are bona fide globe-trotters who have toured to places such as the U.K., Australia, and Japan.

    Polyphia was Amazing!!

by Giorgio on 11/6/23Uptown Theater - Kansas City

I took my Dad to the Polyphia concert for his 81st birthday; he and I were blown away by their performance!! My Dad enjoyed meeting Tim, Scott, Craig and Craig at the meet and greet after their sound check; they also autographed his Army Veteran hat after thanking him for his service. Scott also spotted us after the band’s encore and he tossed my dad a guitar pick; he was on cloud nine as we left the concert venue. I want to thank Scott, Tim, Craig and Craig for making my Father’s birthday week celebration an outstanding success!! He said that next time he’ll remember to bring one of his guitars to have the young men (his words) autograph it.

Awesome band, venue room for improvement

by HonestExperience on 11/5/23Bayou Music Center - Houston

Polyphia was, of course, great! Lights were great. Sound quality was exceptional! Merch was overpriced. C’est La vie. The venue had much room for improvement however. First, there was a dress code that was not previously disclosed. They confiscated my girlfriend’s plastic spiky choker and questioned the chain on her pants before we were even allowed in. They made a big deal about it. If the Bayou Music Center took the time to email me twice that week to inform me about strobe lights and that the start time of the show was being pushed back by 30mins, they could have also informed me of a dress code or prohibited accessories. The stage should be higher to improve visibility for a standing room only crowd. That’s a no-brainer. Large screens were on either side of the stage but the view point was smaller than just watching the stage. Utilize close up shots next time.

    Top 3

by TheG.O.A.T on 11/5/23Bayou Music Center - Houston

This is the 7th time I've seen Polyphia and this was Top 3, if not the best experience yet. The sound guy was -on point-, everything sounded amazing- well balanced and nothing was too loud or too quiet. It was odd not hearing Clay or Scott on the mic and the lack of crowd surfing during Goose was a little disappointing but that was probably thanks to the venue. All in all, another incredible show from an absolutely amazing band.

    Best Concert of my Life

by Anya on 11/5/23Bayou Music Center - Houston

Seeing Polyphia live after listening to them for years was a dream come true. The whole experience was mesmerizing and I’m so happy I had the opportunity to go. The sounds, the lights, the intensity of the performance, all of it was amazing. The band killed on stage.
