About

SUNFLOWER BEAM IN CONCERT:

In early 2016 Rolling Stone called Sunflower Bean "NYC's Coolest Young Band", and it's hard to disagree as they plow through their classic rock-inspired tunes in concert. The trio throws together the best of garage, psych, and alt rock and makes it all their own with ambitious song structures and a modern lyrical sensibility about coming of age in the digital era. Their sound is fresh but their live shows are a throwback to the showmanship of the '70s, as singer/bassist Julia Cumming and singer/guitarist Nick Kivlen deliver a one-two punch on fuzzed-out nuggets like "Wall watcher" and "Easier Said". Sunflower Bean may be young and new to the scene, but their infectiously energetic live shows prove they can rock with the best of their classic rock forebears.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Native Long Islanders Nick Kivlen and Jacob Faber formed Sunflower Bean after graduating high school in 2013. They recruited singer and bassist Julia Cumming shortly after, and soon the trio was playing shows throughout NYC. As buzz mounted in the Brooklyn music scene, the band signed with Fat Possum and began work on their full-length debut. The result was 2016's Human Ceremony, a wildly diverse collection of songs that sees the band explore a dizzying array of rock subgenres. Critics and fans alike latched on to the album in a major way, and ticket buyers are in for a treat whenever the band kicks out their amped-up tunes on tour.

    DUUUUDE

by Llcat on 11/8/22The Southern Cafe & Music Hall - Charlottesville

Awesome! They rocked. I'm so glad I was finally able to see them. The opening bands were good as well. Mix of 20-50 year olds. There were optional seats. They came out and were super personable after the show:)

by Lutoslawski23 on 9/26/18Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

Fantastic show. St. Louis had no idea who they were, but NYC and many other places do! Such a treat to see them up close in such a tiny room! Ticketmaster on the other hand, is a nightmare.

This show was so amazing, fun all around. Mosh pits, crowd surfing, and fans stage diving. I got a chance to meet them as well, they’re as humble as can be. Super awesome band.

    blew my mind

by NYCliveshowfan on 10/12/16Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

Went to the show not knowing what to expect, as I wasn't familiar with the band. On Spotify, Sunflower Bean's music sounded pretty mellow and chill. Live it is loud, intense and heavy. The show was a little out of control, just the way I like it. Openers The Lemon Twigs and B Boys were both fantastic in their own ways. Don't miss this tour.

Sunflower Bean is Real. Sunflower Bean is Rock.

This was one of the best sounds and the most passion I have seen at a live show. I do not like to compare or categorize artists. But it felt like an Arcade Fire meets Velvet Underground meets Mazzy Star vibe. I will see them again and again and again. A breath of fresh air for music. Love.

Sunflower Bean is edgy, fun and nostalgic

by MmmmmTtttttttt on 5/11/16Mohawk Place - Buffalo

I've been reading many articles on them for the past 4 months. I saw they were touring in our area and got tickets. Both my husband and I were pleasantly surprised. What a show!!!! Julia on vocals and bass was at ease and a total delight. I read she's been in the music business since her early teens. She really was incredible. Nick was also on vocals and guitar. He resemblese a young Bob Dylan, but played guitar like Jimmy Page. Wow, just wow! We were totally mesmerized by his old school playing. Lastly, Jacob played the drums. His drumming skills were top of the line and he drummed like it was nobody's business. The three of them together: pure bliss! Catch them before they start selling out arenas. They are definitely going places. A new and forever fan.....

Great Band! Julia Cumming is a star!

by GHOOV on 2/28/16Bowery Ballroom - New York

Great time with the powerful Sunflower Bean at the Bowery Ballroom. Where else can you combine 80s alt with the Velvets, Sabbbath and Blondie? Nick the guitarist seems to be a cross between Bob Dylan and Lou Reed and Doug Yule, but his guitar work carries the band! Jake, the drummer is man from another time and another place. What a great trio.
