About

Donna The Buffalo is not just a band, rather one might say that Donna The Buffalo has become a lifestyle for its members and audiences. Since 1989, the roots rockers have played thousands of shows and countless festivals including Bonnaroo, Newport Folk Festival, Telluride, Austin City Limits Festival, Merle Fest, and Philadelphia Folk Festival.

They've opened for The Dead and have toured with Peter Rowan, Del McCoury, Los Lobos, Little Feat, Jim Lauderdale, Rusted Root, and Railroad Earth to name a few. They also toured with Ben & Jerry's co-founder Ben Cohen to help raise awareness about increased corporate spending in politics.

In 1991, the band started the Finger Lakes Grassroots Festival in Trumansburg, NY. The four day festival has become an annual destination for over 15,000 music lovers every year and was started as an AIDS benefit. It continues as a benefit for arts and education. To date, the event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and is now one of three Grassroots Festivals; the Bi-annual Shakori Hills fest in North Carolina and Virginia Key festival in Florida. In 2016 GrassRoots Culture Camp was introduced in Trumansburg, New York as four days of music, art, dance and movement workshops, including nightly dinners and dances.

    Great Music

by KWKen on 3/6/24The Senate - Columbia

Both bands (Steel Wheels and Donna the Buffalo) were great. The sound was good and the Venue was good (if you don't mind standing). As typical for Columbia, SC, the attendance for a Bluegrass/Americana concert was sparse. These same bands would have sold out in other locations.

    Good time had by all.

by DPut on 3/4/24Jefferson Theater - Charlottesville

The band was on point, as always. Have not been in a few years and forgot how they know how to piece a jam together. Just great. Love the Jefferson theater. Staff is always great, place is clean, sound is on point and it is set up to be a great place to see a show.

    Uplifting Evening

by Old Folkies on 1/7/24Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

We really enjoyed the event-especially Tara Nevin's musical versatility. She was amazing on violin, guitar, squeezebox, and washboard! The only downside was that we're over sixty, and it appeared that many others in the audience were, as well, which made standing for the entire performance pretty uncomfortable. Maybe an option for seats or standing could be arranged for future performances? We would have happily paid more for the choice. Otherwise, it was a great evening!

    Great band but terrible venue

by JM on 12/10/23Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club - Portsmouth

Donna the Buffalo was great as always, but it was completely the wrong venue (Jimmy’s Jazz Club) for this band. Everyone had to sit at dinner tables and there was almost no opportunity and space for people to dance. When someone would get up and dance, it looked awkward. We were sat in a side room that is cut off from the main ballroom and we had to view the whole concert through an open window. I spoke to folks who were sat up close to the stage and they said the sound was overpowering and terrible because they were too close. Why there was no dance floor, I have no idea. This venue is probably better suited for quieter, more mellow music like Jazz or Folk, not Rock music. Very strange place. I absolutely would not recommend going to a concert here unless they remove all of the tables and chairs.

    Didn’t know what to expect…

    by theGiff on 11/2/23

I saw a blip of DtB on late night tv some time ago (Austin City Limits?) and remembered their name, of course. Saw they were in town and decided to go, not really knowing anything else. Less than one minute into their opening number I grew a big smile on my face and it stayed there the rest of the night! In fact, I’m still smiling. Go see them, sit/stand/dance up close, and you will not be disappointed.

First time seeing Donna the Buffalo live. Tara and Jeb were amazing. Such a fun band. One of the best shows I’ve seen this year!

We've been enjoying Donna The Buffalo since 1992.

by Larry on 9/27/23Portland House of Music and Events - Portland

We've been enjoying Donna The Buffalo since 1992, sometimes following them across the country for dozens of shows. We'd planned a Maine vacation this year but didn't find out until our reservations had been made that they'd be in Portland, Maine, 2 days before we planned to be there. So we adjusted our schedule, braving a hurricane and having nowhere to stay those extra days, and it was well worth making that adjustment. Great show, the kind of show that keeps us coming back for more. Great start to our vacation, and it gave us a chance to enjoy a little more of Portland. A little disappointed we didn't see anyone we knew, we know quite a few "Herd"members, but it was a nice crowd and a stellar show.

    Buffalo at the Riviera

by Lynn on 9/12/23The Riviera Theater - Charleston

My sister's and I loved the 2 hour concert. The venue was Art Deco, the herd was steady dancing, and the music was Incredible!

Some miracles , some errors , and wondrous

    by BlueTailedPolishMadMan on 3/6/23

Seen them many times. So many changes . I love much of their older music. New album trying to bring that back . Ideally, i would love to hear those songs i know and love but i would settle for 50% but low and behold , for me , way not enough of . I am now an old fart . I used to be able to dance to most of their concert , now i sit and girate, lol . I miss the old days and the old bliss . So friday brought back a few kisses. Conscious evolution, of course, the jazz . I have a hard time w steps , especially in the dark . I almost danced up the stairs ❤️
