About

Unwound on Tour

During the peak of grunge music came the often remembered and seldom forgotten punk band Unwound. Formed in 1991, the band rocked venues with their post-hardcore, noise-rock sound that was undeniably '90s. Unfortunately for their fans, the group disbanded in 2002. In 2022, 20 years later, the band announced their reformation and subsequent 2023 tour across the United States. Originally formed by Justin Trosper (guitar/vocals), Vern Rumsey (bass) and Brandt Sandeno (drums), Unwound formed their core lineup when Sara Lund replaced Sandeno on drums in 1992. Since their 2022 reunion, Unwound has consisted of original members Trosper and Lund, as well as Jared Warren (bass) and Scott Seckington (keyboard/guitar). Original bassist, Rumsey, passed away in 2020. Starting in the early ''90s, the band released a slew of albums, including Fake Train (1993), New Plastic Ideas (1994), Unwound (1995), The Future of What (1995), Repetition (1996), Challenge For a Civilized Society (1998), A Single History: 1991-1997 (1999), and Leaves Turn Inside You (2001). Unwound had a large amount of unreleased material prior to their breakup. They released part of this material on the album Live Leaves (2012). They then licensed their unreleased material to Numero Group who continued to release albums under the Unwound name, including Kid is Gone (2013), Rat Conspiracy (2014), No Energy (2014), and Empire (2015).

Unwound Live in Concert

Forming in Olympia, Washington, Unwound was at the epicenter of the alternative rock/grunge scene. Once the band formed, they recorded a demo and began touring almost immediately. They started their touring with an extremely low budget in 1991, performing in basements and underground venues. Their dedication to their music was admirable, releasing albums almost every year they were active. Unwound had a unique take on music. They downplayed the "messages" of their songs, claiming the lyrics were secondary to the music. With a strong cult following, Unwound has maintained more than 150,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, with their most popular songs, "Look a Ghost" and "Corpse Pose" combining with more than 4.1 million streams.

    Loved every damn moment

by Matt Aghajanian on 2/17/23The Wiltern - Los Angeles

Never thought I would see them live. So glad I saw them at the Wiltern. Got close as possible in the pit. Wish I could have seen every show on this tour. Sad they are getting older. Sad their bass player is no longer with us. Very emotional experience for me, but loved every moment.
