Maceo wasn't allowed to play his sax for the first 9 songs!

by Sad Listener on 1/13/20Centennial Hall - Tucson

The opener was a big band cover outfit made up of about 15 people (mostly college kids) who were all reading sheet music the WHOLE TIME! It was soulless opener stuff. Then, Maceo came out and JOINED them. It was his band! But it also wasn't his band at all. It was all lead by the orchestrator of the big band. And it was ALL Ray Charles covers! I had front row center for this show and after 9 Ray Charles big band covers of soulless dudes staring at their music stands and Maceo referring to himself as Ray Charles!?! We left. I never even heard him play his sax!! Not once. He came out with it and put it in the stand and then pretended like he was Ray Charles for the next 50 minutes. And to top it off, when Maceo was confused about what song was next, the orchestrator belittled him. He ordered him to turn back to the last page saying "It was in the right place, go back to it!" rather than graciously helping him out. I was just disgusted.

Very disappointing and really not worth the time to spell it out here.

Facility maybe not the best for Maceo Parker

by Snow bird on 1/13/20Centennial Hall - Tucson

Think that the Centennial Hall may not have been the best facility for Maseo Parker. Our seats were in the Center orchestra row AA. The orchestra overpowered his awesome voice and when he was talking definitely hard to understand him. Seemed to be the sound system. Also the description of the program did not emphasize the amount of voice or the focus on Ray Charles. Would definitely see Maseo Parker again.

Maceo Parker at U of A Centennial Hall

by Dasdale on 1/13/20Centennial Hall - Tucson

Maceo Parker was good; not great. A lot of the problem was the terrible acoustics at the venue. Aside from poor acoustics, sound mix was terrible. Band was so loud, you could hardly hear him sing. He just stood there reading the words to Ray Charles songs and singing them. Not the dynamic entertainer I had read about and expected! We left early!

    Didn’t read the fine print!

by Abrigo Bob on 1/13/20Centennial Hall - Tucson

Didn’t read the fine print! It’s my own fault. To me Maceo Parker is all about funk. I did not expect the big band treatment with horn section of 13 people. I love Ray Charles and Maceo did a good job and his renditions, but the horn section seemed intent on drowning out the vocals so that you really couldn’t hear them. The best part of the show and it was too short was when the rhythm section and Maceo got to do a little funk with Maceo on the sax. We should have stayed home and listened to a Maceo CD.

    Maceo Funks it up

    by S. B. on 1/13/20Centennial Hall - Tucson

Maceo was great. The tone of the bass was subsonic and very hard to hear individual notes.(he was also blocked by the keyboard guy.. All of us who went agreed that you couldn't hear the bass notes just a woofy sound ( do the sound guys only listen to rap?). The vocals were often over powered in the mix.

One the best shows I’ve seen in a long time with out computer music, this was the real thing. It was so relaxing. The sounds were great, just needed to lower the sound to hear the background singers. The whole group was fantastic. This was my first time coming and I will come again. Loved it❤️❤️❤️
