    9/13 southern cafe

    by wineshepherd on 12/5/23

James, 'you got to me'! As a connoisseur of pop lyrics, yours are Laffite '61! Had never seen you. Your rich guitar work, wonderful, heartfelt singing with great words and phrasing created powerful images (Rachel's Song esp) I have only experienced from a select few of pop creators (Dylan, Joni, Townes). I'm 69 and can really relate to your musical domain; 'You can't be young and do that'. Thanks for a great show!!

    Wonderful Evening

by Dee on 9/17/23Birchmere - Alexandria

James McMurtry is the definition of cool. He is supremely who he is and has no need to butter up or flatter his audience. He’s there to play his music and to sing his wry, trenchant songs. Which he does in a long and rewarding set with a minimum of banter. He is a talented wordsmith and has a sharp sense of outrage over the plight and exploitation of working people. He is the balladeer of disappointed people. I had forgotten what a fine guitarist he is and hope he comes back soon.

James McMurtry at The Birchmere (September 14, 2023)

by Rick Belcher on 9/17/23Birchmere - Alexandria

My wife and I have seen James McMurtry at the Birchmere several times in the last several years. His performances are consistently outstanding. The Birchmere is a wonderful, friendly, intimate venue, and its sound engineers have never failed (in my experience) to mic the performers perfectly. Balance and levels were spot on. I saw Tommy Emanuel two nights later, and the sound team did an exceptional job with a very different musician. McMurtry is a terrific performer, and the Birchmere is an ideal venue to see him.

    Great show but….

by David on 5/8/23Bijou Theatre - Knoxville

Loved the show and the venue is awesome but during the show at times there were several people in the lobby area where drinks are sold and their conversations were extremely loud and were very distracting.

Awesome show. No fluff. Just great all night. The red dress was a great way to make a statement and never say a word. Ha!

    James McMurtry - Bijou Theater

by Steve on 5/8/23Bijou Theatre - Knoxville

Awesome show starting with Special Guest, Betty Soo. She played a smashin' set and shared stories amd jokes to keep the crowd goin'. James McMurtry amd band came out and played a great set of songs. Amazed by J. MC's true unplugged version of "Blackberry Winter". He kept the show goin with humor...all the way to the encore of "Red Dress". I recommend if you've never seen James McMurtry...Dont wait, go get tix!

    James McMurtry was…okay

by Dave on 5/8/23Bijou Theatre - Knoxville

I had high expectations; I like James McMurtry’s music. To be fair, the band was just great; also James McMurtry is a fabulous guitarist. But, overall, this concert (in Knoxville, TN) was just “OK”; definitely not great nor memorable. James McMurtry seemed tired and made no attempt to establish rapport with the audience. He did very few songs from the “Horses and Hounds” album (which I think is great). He was just punching out his songlist. For his encore, James came out in drag, apparently to protest the Tennessee drag show law. This just seemed weird to me. It was totally out of character for a serious, brooding musician. I didn’t like it. I hope James gets some rest; maybe he’ll feel better & give better concerts.

    Great musician

    by whitesage59 on 5/1/23Duling Hall - Jackson

Love McMurtry, instruments a bit loud for venue size, made it hard to hear lyrics. Was great show. He did one acoustic song off mic that i really enjoyed. Overall have been there a few times and always enjoy that i get to hear a great artist at a low price & it's not a huge venue. Thanks for that opportunity.
