About ESSENCE Festival

Since its 1995 debut, the ESSENCE Festival of Culture has helped shape, define, and celebrate black music and culture. Held every July 4th weekend, the multi-day event initially was meant to be a one-time affair to celebrate the 25th anniversary of ESSENCE magazine. However, it turned out to be an incredibly impactful and empowering event, prompting its return the following year and subsequently evolving into one of the largest and most highly regarded annual festivals in the United States.

While you'll need to purchase tickets to catch the music at #essencefest, anyone can check out the free daily activities and panels held throughout the weekend which includes expert panels, workshops and shopping focused on beauty, health and wellness, entrepreneurship, and more.

This year marks the 30th birthday of the Essence Festival of Culture! The party with a purpose" always includes a stacked lineup of music's biggest names in hip-hop, R&B, soul, funk, and gospel. Throughout the years, there have been many memorable performances and this year will be no different. Buy your tickets and come party with us for our dirty thirty!

Not Perfect, But a good time

    by Ms.T on 7/11/23

A great time was had by all 8 of Us. We went all 3 days. It was different, with all the performers being on one stage, but nevertheless we enjoyed ourselves. The lounge acts are necessary, in the future.

    Essence

    by Ty on 7/10/23

The line up this year was not the best, the way the dud the performance was so long and we didn't get out of the show until 1pm and we couldn't go to any parties, and the fact we could not pull our tickets up on our phone was the worst part of it all

    Essence becoming classless

    by Snola on 7/10/23

    1. Concerts were too long- till 1 to 2 am. It would be ok if the entertainment in between flowed better with seasoned comedians/hosts or DJ’s that did not play the same songs. No Tribe called quest. No WuTang. 2. Some of the artist selections did not make sense from a lineup standpoint. I understand schedules but save them for another time- esp since this was hip hop. Or have 1-2 nights of hip hop and one night for neosoul, r & b, classics, etc The vibe did not flow well 3. The dome air conditioner was not working well on Saturday and that led to aggravation 4. Please do not put people on the stage as fillers from New Orleans who people do not know. I am from here and it was sad to see. No one was paying attention. No one clapped and it was a waste of time and not a good look. 5. Overall not very well put together or thought out. I will not be buying 3 day tickets anymore

    Like Hip Hop Love R&B

    by Essence Forever on 7/10/23

Essence Festival was on point last year to say this year was a bit disappointing. I respect Hip Hop reaching the 50 years, but R&B has been around forever. Essence is usually more successful (my opinion) drawing more people to the city. My friends refused to come down this year due to lack of interest in the lineup. Also, I appreciate the convention center being available to the city at no charge. However, your consumers that purchase tickets should receive loyalty treatment (fair/not fair) as we are the people that continue to return faithfully each year. Finding a parking spot was terrible, waiting in lines that were very extreme, and many of whom were NEVER going to attend the concerts or purchase anything towards the promotion of the festival. It was hot, humiliating, and disgusting. What happened to the Superlounges, the good homestyle food? Let's get it together before Essence becomes extinct! I want to keep one of my favorite events alive. Would the real Essence please stand up?

Is difficult and challenging as we know. So to see all the beautiful women challenging each other with their beauty ,style, grace and respect and independence, and Success. Was a amazing experience

    Essence

    by Paaid4 on 7/9/23

This year's festival was very interesting, especially since it was celebrating 50 years of Hip Hop. Everything was nice except for the screens at the stadium. They were not syned up to the main stage! I wanted to get an Essence tshirt for the group but there was none to be found! Very disappointing! Other than that, it was a nice event.

    Poor Audio

    by Poor Audio on 7/8/23

Artist were good and worked through the poor audio as best as they could. Was really excited to see Ari Lennox perform, but the band's audio over-powered her voice and we barely heard her singing. This was the same for basically all performances until later that evening. Entry to the Superdome was confusing as some were made to walk back to put away bags which apparently did not meet bag policy. I appreciated this for safety reasons, but wondered if some of the staff actually knew the policy expectations. At one point, one man would not let anyone bring in purses. This was just a minor confusion that got better.

Words can’t describe the amazing time we had!

    by Steph G on 7/8/23

Experience was Great. Only flaws was not knowing were certain artist was going to be inside of the convention center. Also for their to be sooo many women they need to designate more restrooms for women. The lines were outrageous

Great Times But Stull Needs Improvement

    by BigJennBabe on 7/7/23

New Orleans is always a good time. The Essence Festival is always a loving celebration. The concerts this year, however, needed improvement. There was too many acts in one night and that made for a looong tiresome night.

    A VERY LONG NIGHT!!

    by Lo on 7/7/23

The lineup was top tier but the duration was exhausting. By the time the headliner got up we were so exhausted we could hardly enjoy the show. Hopefully the lounges are back next year.

    Can't Wait For Next Year

    by Peyton on 7/7/23

Was very fun. When they got complaints about not having enough NOLA artists, they brought out Lil Wayne as a syrprise guest. The Essence Fest creators did great.

    It was okay

    by Cece on 7/7/23

I was not impressed. I missed the super lounges. Some sets were not long enough and some were too long. The headliners this year could've been better. I did appreciate that it started on time.

    Girls Trip Gone Wrong

    by KAREN on 7/7/23

I and 8 of my friends attended Essence Fest 2023 and were highly disappointed. The lineup for the shows was all wrong on all 3 nights. Lauren Hill had everyone waiting and sleeping. When she did decide to come out, the performance was horrible. The band was louder than she was. There were no super lounges, the whole experience from what I remember from before was not satisfactory and my friends were cheated of a great Essence experience.
