First Timer

Mercedes-Benz Superdome - New Orleans

The festival itself was very nice. I think the line up details could have been made available earlier. The app was terrible in giving details. It was too limited in capabilities. The lines were very long. I can handle all that. What I cannot handle is the awful sound quality on Sunday night. I wanted my money back. I’ve had a better experience at local concerts. It was absolutely unprofessional and disappointing.

SuperDome - New Orleans

I loved the atmosphere and the city. The accents drove me crazy. The energy of the city makes you want to live!! No we did not get to experience ALL Essence had to offer but that is why we will plan for next year and take advantage of all of ESSENCE!!! We loved every bit of it.

First Essence Festival Ever!

Mercedes-Benz Superdome - New Orleans

This was my first experience attending the Festival. I only went to the Sunday concert and was not disappointed! Loved the New Jack Swing act...Teddy Riley was on point with the music and the guests he lined up. It was awesome and I didn't have a voice when I left. Will be back next year!

Concerts were great.

Mercedes-Benz Superdome - New Orleans

I think that future services that involve lines to get products needs to be re-evaluated. For example, if I only want the product there should be a line for that or employees to hand them out. If I want information and the samples then have a line for that. Disney started just handing out the ears because they realized that's all most of the people wanted. The ones that wanted to sign up stood in line. It would cut down on so much waiting and disappointed patrons. Several arguments ensued due to lines and people jumping lines. Overall it was a great girls trip for us.

Essence Fest 2018- The Best Ever

Mercedes-Benz Superdome - New Orleans

The Mary J Blige and Janet Jackson concerts were epic. They did not miss a beat. Largest attendance in the history of the festival. Loved every act that was there. Opening acts were fantastic: Queen Latifah, Salt-N-Peppa, Teddy Riley and friends, and Fantasia were showstoppers in their own right. It was amazing.

Great Concerts!!!

Mercedes Superdome - New Orleans

I've attended the Essence for the last four years, and this one was the best one yet. The only issue I have with the tickets is that they put the tickets on sale in August/September, but don't let you actually have the tickets until a couple of weeks before the Festival. If you're not going to put the tickets in my inbox immediately upon purchase, then you should not charge me for them. I had to call back and ask them to change my method of delivery before they would mail the tickets out to me. Duly noted for next year. Also, I called the morning the tickets were on sale like I have in past years, however, when I tried to purchase tickets for this year's Festival, I got through to Ticketmaster about 5 minutes after the tickets went on sale, but there were whole sections already gone. ARE YOU KIDDING ME. IN 5 MINUTES!!!!! How could this happen? Other than that, the lineup was amazing with a lot of surprise guest that I really enjoyed. Overall, it was great. The tickets could be a little more reasonable in price, and you shouldn't let people book a whole section. IJS!!

Essence 2018

Mercedes-Benz Superdome - New Orleans

Love me some Jill Scott And Ericka Badu they were great as they had the Roots backing them up. that part of shw was on point. But Snoop set was terrible because sound was horrific!! You could barely hear him and couldnt hear band at all. This ruin the set because he had special guests come through, the kings of gospel Fred,John P Kee, and 3 of the 4 Clark Sisters. If the sound would have been on point, this would have been an EPIC event.

The concerts were undeniable awesome but we it was very long lines to some times tough to enjoy the activities at the convention center.

Biography

About ESSENCE Festival

Since its 1995 debut, the ESSENCE Festival has helped shape, define, and celebrate African-American music and culture. Held every July 4 weekend at New Orleans' Superdome, the multi-day event initially was meant to be a one-time affair to celebrate the 25th anniversary of ESSENCE magazine.

But it proved to be such a powerful — and empowering — experience that it returned the following year, and has since grown into one of the U.S.'s biggest and most acclaimed annual festivals. "The party with a purpose" includes a stacked lineup of music's biggest names in hip-hop, R&B, soul, funk, and gospel, as well as several free panels and workshops, plus vendors focused on beauty, health and wellness, entrepreneurship, and more. It features five stages — the main stage as well as four standing-room-only "super lounges" throughout the Superdome. While you'll need to purchase tickets to catch the music, anyone can check out the free daily activities and panels held throughout the weekend.

The first ESSENCE Festival in 1995 drew more than 142,000 people who showed up to see music legends like Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, and B.B. King perform. Fans also could attend free empowerment seminars hosted by the likes of Rev. Jesse Jackson and Cornel West.

Since then, the event has grown exponentially. In fact, the 2016 edition brought in more than 450,000 people, and it's only gotten bigger from there. The event has been held in New Orleans every year except 2006, when it made a temporary move to Houston, Texas, as the Crescent City was recovering from the damage of Hurricane Katrina.

Throughout the years, there have been many memorable performances, like when Prince took over the main stage dressed in a wig and fake goatee in 2004, and when Beyoncé made her festival debut in 2001 with trio Destiny's Child. She's since stolen the show a few more times as a solo superstar.

In 1997, saxophonist Kenny G became the festival's first white headliner, and 10 years later, Democratic presidential nominees Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton both made an appearance. In 2019, the festival celebrates its 25th anniversary in New Orleans over the July 4 weekend with performances by Missy Elliott, Mary J. Blige, Nas, H.E.R., Pharrell Williams, and others.
