About

Citizen Cope on Tour

Citizen Cope conveys a kind of quiet authority onstage, a casual command that lets the audience know from the moment he opens his mouth that he's a musical force of nature. Whether he's up there alone with only his songs and his acoustic guitar for company or he's backed up by a full electric band, Cope knows exactly how to capture an audience's attention and hold it for every moment of his performance.

His organic blend of influences encompasses everything from folk and rock to R&B and pop. With his rich, soulful voice and his knack for potent melodic statements, he makes all of his diverse inspirations flow smoothly into the same sonic river. He gives his audience the opportunity to ride along, soak it all up, and have a whole lot of fun along the way.

Citizen Cope Background

The man who came into this world as Clarence Greenwood (before redefining his musical identity and rechristening himself Citizen Cope) got his start working with Washington, D.C., band Basehead before branching off on his own as a singer-songwriter. Not counting a limited-edition indie LP in the 1990s, he released his first widely distributed album in 2002.

That same year, Santana covered Cope's song "Sideways," bringing him in for a guest appearance on the tune to boot. Carlos Santana returned the favor by appearing on Cope's own recording of the song two years later.

It was Cope's 2006 album, Every Waking Moment, that turned out to be his commercial breakthrough, earning him a bigger audience than ever. Since then, his music has been heard just about everywhere, from TV shows (Entourage, Smallville) to film soundtracks (Ghost Town, Fracture), but it's at his concerts that Cope really turns on the magic to the maximum.

Best show I have been to in years!

by Bryan on 5/30/23Ludlow Garage Cincinnati - Cincinnati

It was a great show. The small venue really made everyone feel connected with the artist. The preshow listening party for the new album was amazing. The Q and A Clarence did was great, it made the music even better. The acoustic solo version of all the songs was fantastic and how Clarence did not even have a set list and took requests from the audience was amazing. It was the best show i have seen in 10 years or more!

    Fell asleep

by Ray on 5/22/23State Theatre - Portland

We are big fans of Citizen Cope, but this acoustic performance put my wife to sleep. His mood was somber, and he displayed little energy. We left before the show ended. We saw him at the same venue with a band 3 years ago and that was a totally different experience.

Amazing how far a good song will take you

by Thomas Evan on 5/22/23State Theatre - Portland

Citizen Cope played solo -- just him, his guitar, and a (very) little bit of technology, yet the show was great from start to finish. This is a testament to the strength of his compelling songs and authentic delivery.

    Not Really Acoustic

by Patrick D. on 5/22/23State Theatre - Portland

This event was advertised as a solo acoustic show but it ended up being something else. Solo, yes. Acoustic, no. I understand that most of his hit songs are probably borderline impossible to perform acoustically but a lot of his songs very well could be. Using a soundboard to echo the voice and pumping keyboards/drums through the speakers isn't my idea of acoustic. The show was fine, just a bit different than advertised.

    Great show

by Billdave on 5/22/23State Theatre - Portland

I wish fans would understand what Clarence was speaking about. GET OFF YOUR PHONE AND ENJOY THE MOMENT! He is always a great preformer. It sucks when everyone around you is either trying to stream the performance or chatting with their friends. Only go to a show if you want to see the show with your eyes and not a lens.
