Washington Capitals History

The Capitals were founded in 1974, but did not post a winning record or reach the Playoffs until the 1982-1983 season, when a group led by top scorers Dennis Maruk and Mike Gartner, along with defenseman Rod Langway, ended the frustration. It began a remarkable streak of 14 consecutive seasons in the Playoffs.

After that streak ended in 1996-1997, the Capitals bounced back the next year to win their first conference title. Led by right wing Peter Bondra and goalie Olaf Kölzig, they defeated Boston, Ottawa and Buffalo in the Playoffs to earn their first berth in the Stanley Cup Final. But the Caps were swept in four games.

Alexander Ovechkin arrived in 2005, and since 2007-2008, the Capitals have reached the Playoffs almost every year. The 2014-2015 season began a run of three consecutive years that the Capitals reached the second round, only to lose in heartbreaking fashion. In 2015-2016, they won a franchise-high and NHL-best 56 games only to be felled by Pittsburgh, all the losses coming by one goal. They won a league-best 55 games the next year, but again lost to the Penguins in the second round.

The Capitals would go on to win their first Stanley Cup Championship in franchise history in 2018 when they beat the Vegas Golden Knights. Ovechkin currently ranks second in most career goals scored with 822 and continues to chase Wayne Gretzky's career mark of 894. Along with Gartner and Langway, Yvon Labre and Dale Hunter have had their numbers retired.

    Capital One's improved security screening

by RoundT on 12/18/22Capital One Arena - Washington

Major surprise to find the improved scanners upon entering Capital One Arena. No more having to completely empty your pockets, just walk through one at a time. Much better than struggling to hold your phone for the tickets while juggling keys etc. Still wish they'd install shelving on the concourses so folks could stand and eat - a simple improvement that would make a real difference.

Music so loud it can cause permenant hearing loss

    by M. H. on 12/12/22Capital One Arena - Washington

We loved everything about the event except the extremely LOUD music. There was great fun and high energy during commercial breaks and in between periods. But the music volume Pre-game and during game was so loud that we actually had to put our hands over our ears as it was painful. We could see a bunch of others doing the same or pulling their hoods over the heads. Absolutely no reason for it. They could have dropped the volume by 60 to 80 decibels, and it would have still been plenty loud. We will not return for that reason.

    Total family enjoyment

by Entersandman78 on 12/12/22Capital One Arena - Washington

It’s a great family atmosphere. They put on a great show whenever the game is not in play. When the game is in play they still keep it hopping for the family. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Great game, but concession prices stink

by JVW on 11/28/22Capital One Arena - Washington

I watch a lot of sports and the concession prices at the arena are by far the highest I've ever seen. They're exploiting the customer. I'm from Nottingham, and if Robin Hood was here, I'm sure he'd been checking your concession pricing policy. I'll be back for more games, but won't be buying anything in the arena. Give me sensible prices and I happily will.

    Great time!

by MJ San Miguel on 11/27/22Capital One Arena - Washington

My Husband & I surprised our youngest (13yo son) by taking him to Caps vs Flyers game the eve of Thanksgiving 2022. - We prepaid parking through website & it was very close to our entrance. It was decently priced, managed well, bright, & clean. - The sidewalks were clear of bums & debris. Very presentable. - Upon entry I was able to get an attendant to wheelchair me to my seat. She was absolutely lovely! - Our seats 118 were easy to access, clean, terrific views of the rink, jumbo Tron & stadium. - The jerseys were pricy but of course legit. The one person salesteam was friendly, funny, & helpful. - The food was expensive & kinda bland. Please consider 2 or 3 cup refill on soda! - The bathrooms were clean & stocked. - The entertainment was pretty good! Though it was sometimes hard to understand the female MC. Also, maybe lower music volume a bit while hosts & guests are speaking. - The music was at a great volume & most music was great & appropriate. - The only debris in corridor was from a lady who dropped her water bottle & didn't pick it up. This was after game ended so the corridor was full & no staff would have seen it getting kicked about until much later. - Upon leaving, the staff remembered us & was very friendly on our way out. She was thoughtful, genuine, & professional. - The sidewalks & streets were filled with happy fans. And still presentable. We had a really great & very memorable time! And are considering a new Thanksgiving tradition. Better deals on season tickets & bundles please!

    Overall game experience was fine.

by Dave L on 10/21/22Capital One Arena - Washington

Game experience was mostly okay except music during warmups was insufferably loud, especially in the 400 section. Had to wear headphones to drown out the music a little. Tried the self-serve vending 2 times and it did not work/did not dispense my order. Entry into the arena wasn't bad since I used the Capital One VIP cardholder entrance, however, despite the new ease of entry scanners, I still had to go back to a different line and be physically wanded.

    THE BEST

by AAMarquis on 10/19/22Capital One Arena - Washington

I drove 16 hours to come see the game at the home arena of my favorite team and it was one of the best day of my life! I added my ticket on my wallet in my iPhone and entering the CapitalOne Arena was easy with just a tap like paypass. 10/10 would recommend and will certainly come back! ALL CAPS <3

    More food option needed

by Dan S on 10/15/22Capital One Arena - Washington

Most of the restaurants repeat so total number of options is very low, especially drink carts.

    Amazing arena

by Ricky on 10/12/22Capital One Arena - Washington

Before attending the game, I visited the arena's website. They had info on public transportation nearby, food and drink within the arena, and more! I was able to plan my entire trip. Upon arriving, security was friendly, bartenders were friendly, and concessions was friendly!!! Not typical for the DC metro, so it was impressive to say the least. My only complaint are the food/drink prices. Incredibly high even for the area.
