Washington Capitals History
The Capitals were founded in 1974, but did not post a winning record or reach the Playoffs until the 1982-1983 season, when a group led by top scorers Dennis Maruk and Mike Gartner, along with defenseman Rod Langway, ended the frustration. It began a remarkable streak of 14 consecutive seasons in the Playoffs.
After that streak ended in 1996-1997, the Capitals bounced back the next year to win their first conference title. Led by right wing Peter Bondra and goalie Olaf Kölzig, they defeated Boston, Ottawa and Buffalo in the Playoffs to earn their first berth in the Stanley Cup Final. But the Caps were swept in four games.
Alexander Ovechkin arrived in 2005, and since 2007-2008, the Capitals have reached the Playoffs almost every year. The 2014-2015 season began a run of three consecutive years that the Capitals reached the second round, only to lose in heartbreaking fashion. In 2015-2016, they won a franchise-high and NHL-best 56 games only to be felled by Pittsburgh, all the losses coming by one goal. They won a league-best 55 games the next year, but again lost to the Penguins in the second round.
The Capitals would go on to win their first Stanley Cup Championship in franchise history in 2018 when they beat the Vegas Golden Knights. Ovechkin currently ranks second in most career goals scored with 822 and continues to chase Wayne Gretzky's career mark of 894. Along with Gartner and Langway, Yvon Labre and Dale Hunter have had their numbers retired.

Awesome game (despite losing) and experience! Friendly staff, fab stadium and ultimately a wonderful show!! Beer is expensive however!
It was a great experience, easy to get in, good selection of drinks and good seats. Caps won! And the staff working at the arena were awesome!
Hadn’t been to a Caps game in a while. It was great fun (we were close to the ice—only 9 seats up). Everyone who was assisting caps fans enter, find seats or answer questions was helpful and friendly! Seats were clean though floor was really sticky. Food and sales items were really expensive unfortunately. Only real downside. Be back again in the fall.
Although the Capitals did not win, it was a great experience.
Every aspect of the event was perfect. The staff was very helpful and friendly. Great time.
The Caps games are the most exciting and fan involved games in the DMV. If not just to watch Ovechkin, it’s a safe, fun and fan forward experience. You don’t have to know anything about hockey to instantly be hooked. I have literally never seen or heard a person not love it.
this was our first experience with ice hockey. love to do it again when visiting the US
Everything was great except the physical seating. I've never been in such a tight seat in any venue. Upgrade the seats to allow the average person to fit. Replace the chair arms with something a tad wider.
I expected the arena to be bigger, but was turned off by how dirty everything was. The floors and the seat backs were extremely sticky and the bathrooms were horrible!
It all started with ticket sales. I must say Luke Jackson has to be the best. He is very attentive and pass attention. I highly recommend him for any ticket needs. I did choose great seats along with help from the virtual ticket finder and Luke's assistance. Everyone I encountered at the arena were very professional and willing to help. Only downside is price of food, sodas and water. Great job to all I am looking forward to my next games.
Good game unfortunately caps lost. One down side was that a Rita’s ice cream employee by 113 was busy watching his cell phone movie than paying attention to his customers!!
From the pregame warmup to the end we had the best time.
We had great seats on the first level, although they were quite expensive. But the upper deck was expensive too. The Caps didn't win the game, but you can't count that against them. The food choices were all fried, carb junk and then A LOT of alcoholic options. We stood in line for 10 minutes to get hot chocolate, but then were told they didn't have any, even though it was on the menu?! We showed up with our small, clear stadium bag to put our winter coats and garb in, but the guy outside of the doors said we couldn't bring it in, he made us throw it out. Considering the teen sitting next to us at our seats had a legit full size black backpack, and the clothing store inside gave out bags bigger than what we had with a purchase, the fact that we had to throw out our empty clear bag was absolutely ridiculous. Overall, it was a decent time. The place was clean. The atmosphere was kid friendly. But I wouldn't go again for a long time. Way too expensive for the experience.
Parking was only for a short period of time. Overall cost was expensive.
Overall a great experience. Not a bad seat in the house - even in the nosebleed sections. An announcer to play music and get the fans pumped up would have been nice - fans are too quiet most of the game.
Great experience! Parking was easy. Fun game, they won in overtime!
Everything has gone smoothly with the purchase and use of the tickets. The reminder e-mail is a good service feature.
We had the best time News Years Eve. What an atmosphere! The 9-2 win by the Caps and amazing hat trick made it even better. Enjoyed the light show and music through out the game. The stadium crowd was electric! Could not think of a better way to celebrate the New Year!
Beating Montreal 9-2 was the perfect way to end 2022 and inaugurate 2023
