Washington Capitals History

The Capitals were founded in 1974, but did not post a winning record or reach the Playoffs until the 1982-1983 season, when a group led by top scorers Dennis Maruk and Mike Gartner, along with defenseman Rod Langway, ended the frustration. It began a remarkable streak of 14 consecutive seasons in the Playoffs.

After that streak ended in 1996-1997, the Capitals bounced back the next year to win their first conference title. Led by right wing Peter Bondra and goalie Olaf Kölzig, they defeated Boston, Ottawa and Buffalo in the Playoffs to earn their first berth in the Stanley Cup Final. But the Caps were swept in four games.

Alexander Ovechkin arrived in 2005, and since 2007-2008, the Capitals have reached the Playoffs almost every year. The 2014-2015 season began a run of three consecutive years that the Capitals reached the second round, only to lose in heartbreaking fashion. In 2015-2016, they won a franchise-high and NHL-best 56 games only to be felled by Pittsburgh, all the losses coming by one goal. They won a league-best 55 games the next year, but again lost to the Penguins in the second round.

The Capitals would go on to win their first Stanley Cup Championship in franchise history in 2018 when they beat the Vegas Golden Knights. Ovechkin currently ranks second in most career goals scored with 822 and continues to chase Wayne Gretzky's career mark of 894. Along with Gartner and Langway, Yvon Labre and Dale Hunter have had their numbers retired.

    Seats too close together.

by Rangers Fan on 1/16/24Capital One Arena - Washington

The seats were terrible. We felt like sardines. No arm room. Scrunched up against the folks sitting next to us. Very uncomfortable.

    Great camaraderie

by Stephie on 1/15/24Capital One Arena - Washington

Although the Caps didn’t win at the last game I attended, they played well and the excitement of the crowd never wavered. There were many fans from the opposing team present at the game wearing gear to support the Kraken but there was no animosity expressed by either side. Everyone present seemed to be able to appreciate each other as simply a hockey fan. It was very refreshing to be able to sit next to someone who was cheering for the opposing team without any awkwardness. Many compliments were shared back and forth regarding good plays made by the opposing players and it made the game experience great. I love the Capitals and am so proud to be a Capitals fan. Coach Carbery is amazing! His demeanor is very professional and it is obvious that he is focused on how to improve plays to correct deficiencies rather than harping on mistakes. He is exactly what our team needs.

    First Caps Game at CapOne

by VAFamily01 on 1/2/24Capital One Arena - Washington

Took the family to our fist Caps game at CapOne arena. We sat in the 411 section. Pretty good seats, we had the Caps playing to score at our end in the 1st & 3rd periods. Atmosphere was good. Lots of energy. With the jumbotron, we could see everything, even when it was directly below us. The seats are short & small. Being over six feet tall, I struggled to get comfortable and had to stand a few times to fight off any leg cramps. Food & beverages are pricey, but that is expected at an event like this. Overall a good experience. We rode the Metro to and from the event. Lot of police visible outside the arena.

    Better performance, arena aging

by Tired Caps Fan on 1/2/24Capital One Arena - Washington

I'm tired of going. to games with poor product - performance. But this one was much better vs Nashville despite the loss. Capital Arena isn't being kept up well. crumbling concrete on stairs (near section 121) being held together with tape, bathrooms in not great shape. I hate the thought of the caps moving out of DC to VA but if the arena is not going to take care of itself, then perhaps. On the positive side, there were lots of people helping at the event, and very friendly from security, ticket and food - all extremely helpful.

    Good but could improve

by LARRY LOVE on 12/23/23Capital One Arena - Washington

I don't like the surcharge, nonetheless the ability to transfer tix to others in the group is a game changer - especially when someone wants to go get refreshments...game was excellent, extra period at home against a rival (Caps 3- Islanders 2), seats were on-point but a fun and memorable time with family is immeasurable!

    Awful seats

by Kyle on 12/23/23Capital One Arena - Washington

I was 3 rows off of the ice and the seats sucked. We were where the bleachers meet the ground level and our seats were the same height as the seats infront of us causing us to stare at the backs of the heads in front of us the. Whole. Game.

    Wonderfully Winning Wow!

by Deb on 12/12/23Capital One Arena - Washington

The game was a lot of fun, as everyone held his/her breath, when the Caps achieved the lead, with a score of 4-0. The scattered groups of NY Rangers fans became frustrated, discouraged, and defeated, conceding the victory to the home team. The well-behaved crowd was neither rowdy, nor boisterous, but reveling in the constant wins, by the Caps. We sat at ground level, so that my grandson could be immersed in the game. He was jubilant, watching the Caps players, right up front, allowing him to be more engaged, in what was happening. My grandson was delighted, seeing the players, at the beginning of the game, make their entrances. It was a thrilling game, exciting, and entertaining. The Capitals One Arena is beautiful, to my New York eyes. “The game was terrific”, stated the satisfied spectators, as they scurried homeward.

Great experience, but way over priced.

by Cam on 12/10/23Capital One Arena - Washington

Always a good show, always try and come to a least one game when I travel to the US. Way over priced, hence why they don't sell out mid week games. 300 AUD for a reasonable ticket compared to Australian AFL or NRL your looking 100-150 AUD. I feel sorry for the families.

Ticketmaster app is very well easy to use with exception of moving tickets to apple wallet. There should be instructions for this option.

    Caps for the win!

by Chelsea on 11/25/23Capital One Arena - Washington

We brought our 9 and 5 year old to a game while in town on vacation. It was family friendly and so much fun. Food is super expensive but I guess to be expected. Bring your capitol one card for a discount on everything.

    Amazing game!

by Golfmanray on 11/25/23Capital One Arena - Washington

Tickets were great, Caps score with 1:15 left to tie, and again with 3.5 left in OT to win! Doesn’t get any better than that. Ticket buying was also super easy (even got parking close to the stadium at a great rate. Thanks Ticketmaster.

    Blue Jackets at Capitals Hockey

by Paul C on 11/21/23Capital One Arena - Washington

Venue was great and it was a stand up to Cancer Game. Section 409 seats offered a nice view for a decent price. Close contest and even though my team lost it was enjoyable.

    Boring!

by Caps Game on 11/21/23Capital One Arena - Washington

Just OK! Not enough Fan interaction like some other arenas I've been too. Who cares about trying to find a cow in the crowd! More fan screen shots of the "Cheap Seats"and the fans in general. People love to see themselves on the Jumbotron, kids, people with signs, dancing. I've never been to a game where you could count the people standing up! Everyone was in their seats most of them not even paying attention to the game! I saw more people looking at their phones than the hockey game and my team wasn't even playing. The Arena itself is not that great either. We were in loge seating and a bar area might have been nice, and not just food stands, although the food was great and you pay $18 for a beer at any arena. Just a so-so experience.

    CAPS great, seats NOT!

by Aunt9 on 11/17/23Capital One Arena - Washington

I took my nephew to see the CAPS at the Capital One Arena Tuesday, 11/14/23. The CAPS shut out the Knights and the game was great, however, the seats not so much… I spent $370 for 2 tickets in section 120, row D as a birthday present. These seats were nothing more than folding chairs stuffed/crammed into a too tight space. To make matters worse, one of the seats were actually broken. I had to sit forward in my seat the entire time to allow the person next to fit into their seat, it was very uncomfortable. The seats were too close to even allow for drink holders so we either had to sit our drinks on the floor of hold them the entire time. Every time we all stood, I had wait for the person to my left to sit before I could get back into my chair. It was worse than airplane seats and they’re pretty bad! I have no complaints with the rest of my experience or with the cleanliness or service at the arena but these seats were ridiculous. Lesson learned, I will not be spending the money for “good seats” in this section again!
