Tampa Bay Lightning History

The Tampa Bay Lightning joined the league as an expansion team (along with the Ottawa Senators) in 1992, and earned their first berth in the Playoffs in the 1995-1996 season. The Bolts began to achieve consistent success in 2002-2003; the key ingredient was 1998 first-round draft pick Vincent Lecavalier, a center who went on to play 14 seasons for the Lightning and set almost every team scoring record.

After making the second round in the 2002-2003 Playoffs, the Bolts rocketed to the Stanley Cup Final the following season behind the league's scoring leader, Martin St. Louis, the goaltending of Nikolai Khabibulin, and the efforts of Lecavalier, Brad Richards, Fredrik Modin, Ruslan Fedotenko, Cory Stillman, and captain Dave Andreychuk. The Lightning defeated the Calgary Flames in a Stanley Cup Final that included four games decided by one goal, two of which came in overtime. Fedotenko scored both goals in the clinching 2-1 victory in Game 7.

The Lightning flirted with Playoff success the next two seasons, but struggled for three years after that. After bringing in Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman as general manager, the team returned to the Playoffs in 2010-2011, 2013-2014, and again the following season, when the Bolts — boasting the highest-scoring offense in the league — won 50 games, and the Eastern Conference title. They dispatched the Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, and New York Rangers in a hard-fought series en route to the Stanley Cup Final, where they ultimately lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games.

Powered by the scoring of Nikita Kucherov and Steven Stamkos, the Lightning contended again in 2015-2016, only to be turned away in the conference finals by the eventual winner of the Stanley Cup Championship, the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Lightning subsequently went on to win back-to-back titles, taking home the Stanley Cup Championship in 2020 and 2021, becoming the first-ever team to win two Stanley Cup Championships within one year. The Lightning appeared in the championship again in 2022, but lost to the Colorado Avalanche in Game 6.

    Awesome

by WynterScape on 2/22/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

We went with a group of 8 from Ottawa to see the Sens Vs The Lightning. We were up in the nosebleeds with the rowdy fans and had a blast. Love the lightning bolt that goes off each time Tampa Bay scores. Will definitely come back again to see another game. The stadium was clean and the seats were comfy.

Worst hockey game in 40 years

by Tom T on 2/20/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

To celebrate birthday, I decided to take my wife and daughter to Lightning game - Saturday night vs rival red hot Panthers. Decided to splurge on great seats between the blue lines upper part of lower bowl...$902 for 3 seats face value including taxes. The Lightning team essentially quit on themselves and the fans fove minutes into the game and let the Panthers run up to 8-1 score before ending it mercifully 9-2. The game was over after 5 minutes in, and I will never spend with parking etc $1000 for a family of 3 to be a total disaster of a night in hopes the team feels like playing hatd that night. Needless to say,my wife and daughter have no interest in going to any more games. Absolutely pathetic and total waste of $1000 + for a family of 3. I have watched hockey games for over 40 years and this was simply unacceptable performance. If it was a concert they would have refunded money it was so bad. Costly lesson learned the hard way.

    Experience

Good pregame festivities. Prices are a bit high for food and drink. A little less and would have purchased a few things .

    Traffic

by Duke on 1/28/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

The Lightning game was great!!!! Love the Lightning but….. the traffic getting to and leaving Amalie IS HORRIBLE!!!! Traffic lights need to be synchronized so traffic can flow. It’s super frustrating to sit at light after light waiting for green when there’s no crossing traffic. City needs to do something to make traffic lights facilitate traffic flow. This isn’t rocket science.

Solid stadium, could use better in game entertainment

by Wildfan on 1/22/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

Loved the plaza outside main entrance, don't have that at Xcel energy center. Nice place to hang out before the game. Couple of solid bars very close to the entrance as well inside was really nice. Liked the bar top setup they had for people to eat and drink food. Only criticism is kinda in game entertainment for the fans. At wild games during commercial breaks and intermission they have trivia for fans through out the game which is nice way for fAn involvement. As far as mascot, might as well not have one he to put it frank sucked. Watched him stay in 1 section in front of a handful of fans for most of period. There job is to get fans throughout the stadium hyped. This one did not. Could take some tips from wild mascot nordy for that one. Overall game experience was great except for the wild loosing.

    Bolts rule

by Revkev on 1/21/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

I’ve been to numerous major sporting events around the country. Football, baseball, basketball, Golf, hockey, soccer, horse racing, auto racing, even jai lai, polo and bull fights in Spain. Nothing anywhere comes close to the fan experience for a Lightning game at Amalie Arena. Any one who goes with me always asks, when are we going again?

    Our View Was Obstructed

by DonD on 1/14/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

Both of seats were right in front of stairs (Sec. 304 Row H Seats 22 & 23) with obstructed view. So, Fans going to and from their seats constantly blocked our view. I won't be purchasing these seats again as we were very disappointed.

Never again sitting in 300 section

by Nat on 1/14/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

It gave me so much anxiety! Especially being pregnant. I never realized how steep it is up high as someone that’s always in the 100-200 level. Wishing tickets were more affordable for lower levels to be able to attend more games.

    Amalie Arena Tampa Bay Lightning

    by muskokagirl13 on 1/3/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

We recently attended two Home Games at Amalie Arena over the Christmas Break. One right behind the Lightning Bench and the other behind Vasilevskiy in net 1st and 3rd Periods. Even though we lost both games, the entire event was exceptional each time. From Thunder Alley pregame fun, to the food and shops inside Amalie, to the seats themselves and fan experiences throughout the evening, Lightning games are ALWAYS the highlight of our extended stay in the Tampa area. Expect to spend longer than planned before and after the game. There is so much to do not just in Thunder Alley, but also in the Channelside/Water St./Riverwalk area.
