Tampa Bay Lightning History

The Tampa Bay Lightning joined the league as an expansion team (along with the Ottawa Senators) in 1992, and earned their first berth in the Playoffs in the 1995-1996 season. The Bolts began to achieve consistent success in 2002-2003; the key ingredient was 1998 first-round draft pick Vincent Lecavalier, a center who went on to play 14 seasons for the Lightning and set almost every team scoring record.

After making the second round in the 2002-2003 Playoffs, the Bolts rocketed to the Stanley Cup Final the following season behind the league's scoring leader, Martin St. Louis, the goaltending of Nikolai Khabibulin, and the efforts of Lecavalier, Brad Richards, Fredrik Modin, Ruslan Fedotenko, Cory Stillman, and captain Dave Andreychuk. The Lightning defeated the Calgary Flames in a Stanley Cup Final that included four games decided by one goal, two of which came in overtime. Fedotenko scored both goals in the clinching 2-1 victory in Game 7.

The Lightning flirted with Playoff success the next two seasons, but struggled for three years after that. After bringing in Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman as general manager, the team returned to the Playoffs in 2010-2011, 2013-2014, and again the following season, when the Bolts — boasting the highest-scoring offense in the league — won 50 games, and the Eastern Conference title. They dispatched the Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, and New York Rangers in a hard-fought series en route to the Stanley Cup Final, where they ultimately lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games.

Powered by the scoring of Nikita Kucherov and Steven Stamkos, the Lightning contended again in 2015-2016, only to be turned away in the conference finals by the eventual winner of the Stanley Cup Championship, the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Lightning subsequently went on to win back-to-back titles, taking home the Stanley Cup Championship in 2020 and 2021, becoming the first-ever team to win two Stanley Cup Championships within one year. The Lightning appeared in the championship again in 2022, but lost to the Colorado Avalanche in Game 6.

    A wonderful experience

by B III on 4/4/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

I hadn’t been to a live NHL game since before COVID, so this was a treat from the start. As one of the minority Red Wings fans I was pleasantly surprised by the large number of similar sweaters in the crowd and stands. There was a souvenir towel at my seat and that was just part of the total entertainment package that the arena and Lightning staff provided throughout the evening. Pregame warmups, between periods entertainment, honoring veterans, dance & kiss cams, etc. were all fun to watch and cheer. The home crowd, although not pleased with the end result of the game, was very polite and respectful of us visitors. I believe that these two teams have a unique bond, forged by our shared personnel over the years. I hope to return to the Amalie Arena for next year’s game with the Red Wings. Thanks for the wonderful experience!!!

    Amazing atmosphere!

by JRo on 4/2/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

It was the very first time my sister who lives in north FL came down to see the TB Lightning play. She told me and her friends "it's like a party in here". I couldn't agree more, it's like a giant party for all types of fans and they make sure the kids have fun too! From start to finish and everything in between it is a must have experience for the hockey fan. Oh and I absolutely love the fact that they acknowledge those who serve in our military, first class by them in my book!

    New to the Lightning

    by Jems on 3/31/24

I have been watching hockey my whole life, but started attending in person in my thirties. I had season tickets for years for the Bruins in the old Garden, but now we live in Florida. My wife, and kids never understood how being at a game is far more an experience than watching hockey on tv. Until….. Now they are all hooked. My wife and 15 year old daughter were blown away by the speed, the sound of the crowd, and the big picture that comes with seeing the whole play developing from crease to crease. My son, now an adult, instantly became a fan, yelling and howling play after play. For a moment I wasn’t sure this was my family, but they were taking cues from my reactions. They had given me Bruins / Lightning tickets for my birthday, not having ever attended a game themselves. Turns out that the venue is excellent, the food is good, and our new home team just gained a new hockey family. Oh, I will close by saying I felt very safe and secure the whole time. Amalie Arena is on point, and access in is very easy. Takes a bit to get out, but eventually everything moves along well enough.

My sister & her husband were in town. Was able to get great seats and enjoyed watching the game. They received a memorial puck and certificate for first timers.🏒

    Bruin’s fan

by Larry on 3/30/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

As a snowbird Bruins fan, I look forward to my annual Tampa/Boston hockey game. The Amalie atmosphere is the best that I’ve ever experienced. The entertainment during the game’s downtime is a lot of fun. Kudos to the production staff.

    Sport at it’s best

by Sharon M on 3/30/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

Not my first visit to Amalie and definitely not my last (despite living 4500 miles and an ocean away). Tampa Bay Lightning always put on a show, whatever the result. And this time, we had the result we wanted too.

    Awesome

by John on 3/30/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

Our first game at Amalie arena when choosing tickets, the map didn’t show what row the walkway was at. With very little seat selection, we had to take row N. being in our 70’s and knee issues, if we go again we will know.we only did 2 periods because when we left for washroom break, we were not going to climb up there again. Other than that it was good.
