MAX CREEK IN CONCERT:
Improvisatory rock gurus Max Creek have been jamming with the best of them for more than four decades, with no signs of slowing down. The group's unique sound combines elements of country, touches of Grateful Dead-era psychedelic rock, and the experimental sensibility of bands like Phish. Not surprisingly, Phish bassist Mike Gordon lists Max Creek among his favorite bands, a fact that underscores the group's enduring influence in jam rock circles. Max Creek's marathon live shows feature virtuosic solos, extended breakdowns, and plenty of improvisation, making for a dynamic concert experience that's heavy on stellar musicianship and full of unexpected surprises.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Connecticut jam rock outfit Max Creek was formed in 1971 by guitarist Dave Reed, bassist John Rider, and drummer Bob Gosselin. The group got their start playing country music, but by the mid-'70s they had moved towards the psych rock sound popularized by the Grateful Dead. Despite several early lineup changes the band always landed on its feet, and in 1977 they released their self-titled debut album. A string of improv-heavy albums followed in the '80s and '90s, establishing them as pioneers of the jam band movement later associated with groups like Phish. They became legendary for their epic three-hour live shows, and by the late '80s they were averaging 200 performances a year. After taking some time off in the '90s to focus on family, the band returned in 2000 with a string of concerts and a live album recorded at the Connecticut Expo Center. They continue to be a favorite with ticket buyers for their unbridled creativity, prodigious chops, and vibrant live shows on tour.

I saw Max Creek both nights at Ophelia's. It was so much fun! I first saw them about 25 years ago and was immediately hooked. They are all super talented musicians and are jammin it better than ever 💕
The three orginal members of Max Creek have playing together spanning 5 decades now and they just get better and can still tear the house down!!! Even though they have been influenced by the Dead this band has a very large repetoire of their own and can cover a real wide range of genres and do so with taste and the right balance of reverance. Lots of great old classic Creek on this night and not unusual to hear something I have not heard them perform before. Lots of deep, innovavative jams and some wild rides that had the whole place humming along. Its worth mentioning that the guitar player is a jaw dropper, Scott can be a real physical guitar player giving it his all and can be stop on a dime tight. Last Dance with Mary Jane encore was simply perfect, raucus and FUN! Really great crowd, into the music and pretty well behaved Id say. . Love the venue, its a place where bands come to play!
They are going on 45 years together ! If you have not seen them yet put it on your bucket list !
I have seen Max Creek many times. This show was smoking hot. The crowd that was there were blown away by their energy.
This was my first Max Creek show as well as my first time at the Port City Music Hall. The venue was the perfect size, small and intimate. The crowd was great to be a part of! Max creek was amazing, they covered a bunch of great songs and they were so fun! I will definitely see them again.
Saw Max Creek back in 1983, just as rockin' today as they were then! Good show, great time.
