The Last Rockstars on Tour

Four staples from the Japanese rock scene are joining forces to take the world by storm with The Last Rockstars. Members Yoshiki, Hyde, Sugizo, and Miyavi have such influence in the J-Rock scene that after premiering just two songs, the group announced an international tour. Spanning across Tokyo, New York and Los Angeles, The Last Rockstars Live Debut 2023 tour is already sold out across the four Tokyo shows and both American stops with an additional show at the New York Hammerstein Ballroom added due to high demand. In December 2022, the super group released their first single "THE LAST ROCKSTARS (Paris Mix)" via Ingrooves Music Group and immediately shot up to the No. 1 spot on the iTunes Rock and All Genres charts in Japan. The song helped set the tone for what will assuredly be a high-energy, upbeat and emotional live show experience. A few weeks later in January of 2023, The Last Rockstars released a music video for the song, which skyrocketed to over a million views on YouTube within the first three days.

The Last Rockstars Live in Concert

Leading the band from the drums and piano is Yoshiki, a Japanese rock icon who previously led X Japan. During his time with X Japan, Yoshiki performed on some of the biggest stages in the world, such as Coachellal, Madison Square Garden and Wembley Arena. Along with his achievements with X Japan, Yoshiki was also a member of S.K.I.N. and has composed Hollywood film soundtracks as well as being awarded the Medal of Honor from the Japanese Government for his philanthropy. Covering vocals for the group is Hyde -- an internationally recognized vocalist for L'Arc-en-Ciel, and Vamps, with more than 40 million albums sold worldwide -- who has headlined shows at Madison Square Garden. Hyde has also seen success as a solo artist and has toured internationally as a solo act. On guitar is Sugizo, who was also a member of X Japan but also played with Luna Sea. Sugizo is also known for writing trance and psy trance, a genre of electronic dance music, as a member of the group Juno Reactor. Also on guitar is Miyavi, known for his "finger-slap" style of playing guitar for Dué le Quartz and S.K.I.N. with Yoshiki. Not only is he known for his music talents, but Miyavi has also appeared in the hit films Unbroken, Kong: Skull Island and Stray.

    A Once In a Life Time J-Rock ALL-STARS Performance

by Dreamtime on 3/26/23Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

The lining up outside on to the street was pretty interesting. Not a problem since there were escort securities monitoring the line. Quite painful for those under dressed because it was around -10 degree that day. There is no grand entrance hall with food or stores etc., concert merchandise counter was set up at a corner, pretty congested with lack of giving further directions after security check. Inside the hall - was just a whole empty clean floor. Easy to find standing spot. Stage height, sounds, lighting, screen and show add-on effects were amazing. Structure and rundown of the show was flawless. Band-maid guest performances was a wonderful kick-start to the night. Many thanks to Yoshiki, Hyde, Sugizo & Miyavi for all the hard work and put on a show in NYC. Show full of energy and what a blast, glad they did the added show. In door line up for the merchandise after the show was a relief and worked out fine. Can't wait to see their next tour if possible to attend.

Nothing in the world like it!

by JJ on 2/14/23Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

While I wasn't expecting such a long wait for it to begin, the actual concert itself was absolutely amazing! It's hard to put into words how incredible it was to see those four on stage, giving everything 110% in their performances! HYDE, Sugizo, Miyavi and Yoshiki are world-changing rockstars and I have ZERO regrets in making THE LAST ROCKSTARS my first ever Japanese Rock Concert!! The songs were beautifully done, catchy and ones to remember for a long time to come. As for the venue itself, despite how many people were there, the staff handled themselves really well and it was as organized as it could be, all things considered. 10/10 would do this again! It tops all of my other concert experiences i've had in my life.

    Way Beyond My Expectation!!

by Shane Liu on 2/14/23Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

I’m a huge X Japan / Yoshiki fan. Going this live with zero interest in Sugizo, Miyavi and Hyde, and only knowing ONE song of theirs… Damn. I’m now also a The Last Rockstars fan! 😳

    World-class Musicians

by Morgan on 2/13/23Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

The doors opened on time, however The Palladium technical staff caused an almost 45-minute delay because their setup, sound and lighting technicians neglected to make sure that all the equipment was ready to go at show time. Many musicians confronted with the Palladium technicians' unprofessionalism would have canceled the concert, however these musicians are seasoned performers who did not want to disappoint their audience, and they overcame these difficulties with grace. Their performance was amazing. These musicians deserved better, and I hope that the next venue they play in LA is one other than the Palladium.

Extremely promising live debut marred by technical problems

by Ian S. on 2/13/23Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

I was glad to see that Yoshiki had started up a new supergroup after the long delays in releasing the first X Japan album since that band's reunion, and that it would also include Sugizo, who is one of my favorite guitarists and a highly talented multi-instrumentalist. This would also be my first live experience of Miyavi and Hyde, and both those performers came through in spades. Miyavi's infectious enthusiasm and downright crazy slap-style guitar really drive this new band, and Hyde is just so damn fun to watch. The entire stage is his territory, and his emotions are clearly written all over his face and in his vocals. One of the highlights of the night was when, in the middle of "HONEY" the only L'arc-en-ciel song on the setlist, he got hit square in the face with somebody's bra... and didn't drop a note! Yup, these guys really are rockstars! Yoshiki always makes space in his concerts for audience participation, and that came through with an entirely audience-sung rendition of X Japan's "Endless Rain" with Yoshiki leading on piano, the new original composition "Shine," and the concert-closing reprise of "The Last Rockstars." The latter song definitely seems to be intended as the crowd sing-along/jump-along equivalent to X Japan's "X," and it slots into that role admirably. This crowd was really into it, and I think once the fanbase gets more used to these songs, future concerts will be even more fun. Unfortunately, it seems that something is always lost bringing these productions from Asian stadiums and arenas to smaller venues here in the US. Much like when I saw X Japan at the Fox Theater in Oakland in 2010, the vocals and guitars during this concert were very washed-out and overpowered by the backing tracks and drumming. I don't know if it's on the sound engineering side of things, or that a 4,000-capacity theater's sound system simply isn't ready to handle hard rock and power metal, but this was a huge letdown. The vocal/violin duet with Hyde and Sugizo midway through the setlist should have been damn near the peak of the experience, but it couldn't quite overcome the compromised sound. By contrast, recordings from the Tokyo tour dates at a much larger arena show crystal-clear vocals and instrumentation. I hope that these sound issues are worked out for the next one of these concerts I attend, whether X Japan or Last Rockstars, or that Yoshiki's team simply books a bigger venue for their next California concert. This was all over and above an hour-long delay at the start of the set while the stage crew hunted down replacement microphones for Hyde and Yoshiki. However, the technical snafus shouldn't deter future audiences from coming out to see The Last Rockstars. No matter what, all four of these guys are world-class talents still at the top of their game, and they can go toe-to-toe with the very best American and European rock bands. I can't wait to see what they do next. P.S The opening act BAND-MAID was a huge, happy surprise and instantly converted me into a fan. Don't miss them either; I'm eagerly awaiting the announcement of their next West Coast tour dates.
