A miraculous show comes up short
by Danzbuff on 6/25/19Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook TerraceFirst off, I have seen and been following the show MATILDA since it's debut in Stratford in 2010. I being inspired by how miraculous the story intertwines, the music, dancing and just the unique show itself - how it is deep but heartwarming. What makes the show miraculous is the factors that made it an Awarding-Winning Musical. When you take out those factors and create your own ''image'' it faulers with emotion and magic. First off, the opening scene is a birthday scene with a ''birthday table'' in the script. No table at all. Having a table is part of the fun part of the scene. The table is the ''prop''. The kids stood isolated vs at a table together upping one another how they are a ''miracle.'' The other scene was hideous in "When I Grow Up" where adult characters would lip sync a child's voice. It had no emotion. Normally, this is another magically and emotional scene. You see, the scene calls for swings and builds into this beautiful swing playground scene. The swings as it was written symbolize ''childhood'. What happens when you take those items out? It becomes very awkward. Having the center of the scene's prop creates the emotion of the scene. It would be the first time I did not get teary seeing this scene which is normally very moving. Normally adults walk out teary thinking of their youth, and children walk out pondering about their adulthood or ''when I grow up". Everything means something on the stage. It's like having no table an chair in the "Empty Chairs and Tables" scene from Les Miz. The dancing and talent were beautiful. The MICHAEL character came off very annoying and stupid ever more so. The kid actors and Matilda's were miraculous adorable and talented. The show itself was dark with women dressed in dark vintage wear and black Funeral like dresses and veils. The cast came out in street wear at the bows. It just seemed off. It was good thanks to the wonderful cast but lacked depth from the directional point. If your going to do an Awarding Winning show that has won based on is beauty, and direction, don't need to change it to loose the emotional appeal and magic. This was the first time I saw this production that I wasn't moved but the talented cast made me move with their talents.
