A Bronx Tale: The Musical on Tour
Originating in Los Angeles as a one-man play written and performed by Chazz Palminteri, A Bronx Tale became a 1993 movie produced and directed by Robert De Niro before opening as a Broadway musical in 2016. Palminteri's coming-of-age story about Calogero, a young New Yorker struggling to reconcile his father's values with the alluring world of organized crime, is now a powerful touring show retaining the high standards set by codirectors De Niro and Jerry Zaks. Alan Menken, known for the Disney screen and stage classics Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, composed the doo-wop flavored score. The touring cast features 2015 American Idol winner Nick Fradiani as Calogero's father, with Jeff Brooks as the charismatic mob boss, Sonny. Fans of Jersey Boys and West Side Story will find much to enjoy and admire in a musical that captures New York's multicultural milieu in all its colorful intensity.
A Bronx Tale: The Musical Background
Chazz Palminteri's stirring one-man play about a young New Yorker torn between his father's old-school ethics and a life of crime is based on the writer-actor's traumatic childhood encounter with murder. After portraying 18 characters onstage, Palminteri found a sympathetic patron and partner in Robert De Niro, with whom Palminteri would act in the acclaimed 1993 film adaptation of A Bronx Tale, which De Niro produced and directed. After performing his one-man show on Broadway in 2007, Palminteri expanded it into a full-fledged musical, codirected by De Niro, that fleshed out his story with the evocative sounds of doo-wop, R&B and 1960s girl groups as reimagined by composer Alan Menken with lyricist Glenn Slater. Palminteri's story also includes an interracial romance whose challenges echo those explored in Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story. Over the decades, A Bronx Tale has evolved into a multimedia morality saga whose universal lessons are delivered in high-spirited, emotionally riveting Broadway style.
Loved it!! Such talent, loved the movie and the show even more!! I just wish it were here longer, I’d go again!!
Such a great story and the actors were awesome!! Great job!!
Great job. Actors were amazing, wonderful singing voices and terrific dancing.
We drove from Detroit to Pittsburgh to see A Bronx Tale. We thought it was terrific! The singing, the dancing, and the actors were all excellent. Nick Fradiani, who played Lorenzo, has such a beautiful voice. Highly recommend this show.
I absolutely loved it! A Bronx Tale is my favorite movie so I was surprised that they had turned this pretty serious movie into a musical. I was worried it would take away from the story and make it more comical than it should but it definitely blew me away. The music was great and the actors really stayed true to the original characters. If I didn't live so far from DPAC, I probably would have seen it a few more times
Nothing wrong with this production......just not the most outstanding performance I've seen. The acting was fine, the music was fine, the sets were fine. Just didn't turn me on personally.
We always enjoy coming to BTL. Shows are always first class and talent is amazing. All the folks who work there are always very nice and helpful. But one issue on this time. It was much cooler during the event. My wife is always cold but was much more so than usual. Then about thirty minutes before it was over the a/c came on and she was very uncomfortable and I was cold and face and ears were extremely cold. We knew it wasn’t just us as we saw others sitting around us pulling coats up over themselves. Had there been more time left I would have come out looking for assistance but didn’t this time. This has not happened at any of the other times we have been before. And we’re very hopeful it won’t be that way again. We would hate to not be able to come in the future when, as I said earlier, we enjoy coming so much.
We saw this show in the upper balcony and were pleasantly surprised at the great sight lines and acoustics. The cast was phenomenal, especially the young actor! DPAC is a beautiful theater and we appreciate having great theater close to home.
Good show, not the best I’ve seen but it was good! Started off a little slow but got much better!
This is my second time seeing a Bronx Tale the Musical. It was true to the original play and movie. See it and enjoy! I love the DPAC, because every seat is a great seat!
We had a great time at A Bronx Tale. The cast did an amazing job and we enjoyed meeting some of the cast after the show.
One of the best musicals I’ve seen in a long time! @nickfradiani and the entire cast did a great job sharing this incredible story with us. Loved every minute of it ❤️ Definitely a MUST SEE of a Five Star Production!!
This show had humor, drama, romance, was really entertaining. Very good morals and examples of growing up and life lessons.
This play was advertised as a cross between Grease and West Side story. Although it was very well performed the actual play was grittier than I expected. I took my mother for her 80th birthday and found the language and premis more than I bargained for. At times it was uncomfortable as not only was my mother there but also children there with thier parents. I think had there been prior notice before tickets were sold this would have been prevented.
THE CAST DID AN AMAZING JOB!! IT WAS MY FIRST PLAY AND I WOULD LOVE TO SEE IT AGAIN A MUST SEE EVEN HAD MY 12 AND 6 YEAR OLD WITH AND THEY LOVED IT.
What a great show! It's a musical version of the movie. Very accurate. Excellent acting. Actors had great singing voices. Would see it again!
I thought the show was very enjoyable. The cast members especially the boy did a great job.
The play was very good. It was a little warm in there I saw people fanning so we could have used more air in the theater. But the overall experience was good.
The lead role, that man was spot on. He was better than the original. His vocals and accents made me feel that we were sitting on his front stoop with him. The lady that played his love interest had vocals that were out of this world. If they come back to play again I will definitely go see them again. It was just awesome!!!!!
The whole production was fabulous. The actors were all in character and very easy on the eyes. It held a special place in my heart as my family had lived in the Bronx when i was young and it brought back my youth. The musical score. If it were playing here today I'd be in the front row.
