About

Michelle Obama on Tour

Former First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama is no stranger to the public eye. The Chicago native maintained a highly visible presence throughout husband Barack Obama's two terms as President of the United States, and was comfortable in any situation: serving as an international ambassador, visiting schools, or moving and grooving at a Beyoncé concert. Like other first ladies, Obama is also using her post-White House time to make a difference in the world. A galvanizing speaker known for her down-to-earth delivery and real-talk approach, she embarked on a book tour in support of her 2018 memoir, ‘Becoming,' with appearances full of storytelling and conversation.

About Michelle Obama

Born in Chicago, Michelle Obama grew up in a loving household that prioritized family and education. Accordingly, she holds an undergraduate degree from Princeton and a law degree from Harvard. Although Obama did practice law—in fact, she met future husband and President of the United States Barack Obama while working at a firm—she also held multiple private-sector jobs. Most notably, she was the founding executive director of the Chicago branch of Public Allies, a nonprofit focused on cultivating leadership in younger generations.

As First Lady of the United States for eight years starting in 2009, Obama continued to seek out socially conscious causes that benefit the greater good. She championed women's rights and education for girls; became a vocal supporter of military families and spouses; and promoted healthy eating via multiple initiatives, including the "Let's Move!" campaign to decrease childhood obesity. Since leaving the White House, she's continued to be an outspoken advocate for gender equality, education, and political diversity. More recently, she released her second book, the 2018 memoir ‘Becoming,' which follows 2012's New York Times best seller ‘American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America.'

    Michelle is an icon

by Kristen on 10/25/23Scotiabank Centre - Halifax

Michelle is such a gem, and the event was beautifully coordinated and well-executed, kudos to the Scotiabank Ctr team. However, the moderator was absolutely not the right match for the event. She was out of touch, asked inane questions and was not well-suited to the task. She was also the moderator for the Barack Obama event and she really cannot host this type of event again--its embarrassing to to our Province and will not attract more speakers of this caliber. Thanks, Kristen

Michelle Obama was everything I wanted her to be! Incredible. Unfortunately, the moderator was a VERY poor choice and honestly left me embarrassed. What happened here?

    Michelle Obama!

by TLC on 10/23/23Scotiabank Centre - Halifax

Michelle Obama was absolutely incredible, captivating and entertaining! The moderator for the event was a poor pairing! Because the company sponsors the event doesn't me they should be the moderator as well. The city is full of talent both young and old , where a selection for a better pairing could have easily been chosen..

Obama Outstanding, Moderator Mediocre at best

    by br1989 on 10/23/23Scotiabank Centre - Halifax

I was so excited to see Michelle Obama and hear her speak. I admire her so much for her intelligence, partnership with her husband, activism, and approach to life. I was looking forward to hearing her perspective on being a woman in today's environment, challenges she thinks we and young people face, and also insights into what she is doing now. Unfortunately, the moderator was not up to the task, and asked mainly shallow questions such as 'what was in the box from the Trumps?' and 'how do you feel that people forget you made more money than your husband?'. As Michelle answered - 'who cares?'. This was such a wasted opportunity, and made Nova Scotia seem way behind the times. The moderator somehow made the discussion about her, speaking about her recent trip to South Africa and asking about Michelle Obama's meeting of Nelson Mandela. This was clearly just a question so she could speak about her own trip. This was a missed opportunity to have a young person of colour moderate. I did not attend when Barack Obama was in Halifax, but I heard it was the same moderator and the questions were also shallow and unimportant. I hope that when we have someone of this caliber visit Halifax again we look to get the best moderator, not just the highest level person in power. The event will be better for it.

    Michelle Obama was AMAZING!

by Second Obama event on 10/22/23Scotiabank Centre - Halifax

This was my second Obama event. The first was the Barak event five years ago. That event I walked away from feeling embarrassed because although Barak was an excellent speaker, the moderator could have been better prepared with better questions and she really controlled the conversation. I gave a little leeway/leniency as I felt that maybe the moderator had no experience and would learn from this event if they were to go back and watch it again. Five years later, same moderator, different Obama! I was embarrassed at some of the questions that were asked! I will say however that Michelle was an amazing interviewee and controlled the conversation even when those questions were thrown her way (that should have been rephrased, led up to or not asked at all!). She turned those questions into a positive or an opportunity to present good information in spite of where it could have gone. I could have listened to Michelle all evening. I felt like she had a lot of knowledge and experience to share and I left with many nuggets in spite of the moderator. That being said, I feel that opportunity was passed by. Why did we not ask the young people to submit questions for consideration? Why did we not ask for someone to moderate from the black community? Why did we not learn from the last event? I would hope that in 5 years time, should another event be organized, these things would be considered!

    Michelle Obama

by Trish on 10/22/23Scotiabank Centre - Halifax

The evening with Michelle Obama was extraordinary. She is one of the most gracious and brilliant woman in the world. I was pleased to be able to attend the event and was thrilled with how she handled the interview. This was definitely a night I will always remember. Thanks for bringing her to Nova Scotia!!

Was awesome to see and hear her in person

by Ange on 10/22/23Scotiabank Centre - Halifax

Was wonderful to see and hear Michelle Obama the interviewer however was inexperienced and asked pretty inane questions luckily Michelle was able to elevate the conversation thru her answers. Definitely should have hired a professional experienced interviewer.

Michelle was great; Moderator was awful

by Big Fan on 10/22/23Scotiabank Centre - Halifax

Michelle Obama was as fascinating as expected. Who could hear her and not want to spend more time listening to her speak? The moderator was very disappointing. This format requires a journalist or someone with experience asking intelligent questions so the guest doesn't need to clarify what is being asked, and isn't offended by the commentary. If the Co-Op Assn does this again, they should hire a pro to moderate!

    Mixed feelings

by Snowwhite 64 on 10/22/23Scotiabank Centre - Halifax

Mrs. Obama was great, moderator, not so much. Seats were terrible, started 1/2 hr late and only went for 50 minutes. Not worth price we paid.
